Will the mild winter/early start of crabs running=bigger crabs in the fall?

I can help but wonder what impact the crabs beginning their "run" early will have on their size this fall. Last year, the crabs didn't really get moving here in NJ until mid-May. This year they are out, about and eating two months earlier.
Thoughts?

Forty years on the water and I have never seen crabs this early in the upper bay but I have friends seeing them while perch fishing. I am not sure of the outcome of the early awakening but longer feeding and molting times should yield bigger fall crabs. That being said this cold snap has me worried that if the crabs go dormant again the stress could kill weaker ones...Time will tell

The cold snap may keep me off the water tomorrow. Everyone wants crabs, but no one seems to want to hit the water tomorrow.

Ron, if you ever need backup, call me with a couple days notice and I would brave the perfect storm just to get out somewhere different.
Oh, by the way, I don't break fishing rods, baskets fall in the water or miss crabs...

I think it will depend on when the first peeler runs happen. The water temp here on Friday was 52. Typically the peeler run here is the new or full moon in May. However, I saw a shed on the boat ramp yesterday.
If it comes in April, then I would think we would have a extra month of growth.

i think we'll see plenty of large females come fall, last year i got into em thick. An old crabber told me when sooks overtake an area, the males leave. i've seen signs which could support that.

Longer growing season means longer catching season as well. That might slow things down a bit by the end of the year or for the start of next year.

thats a strong possibility especially since more people are crabbing earlier and later every season. Sooner or later it will catch up to us.

Crabs are gonna be dirt cheap this year. The way VA NJ are catchin, MD, the last to get started, gets the short end of the $tick.

Ray everyone knows that md crabs are the best and by far the sweetest, not to mention the size they grow to here. Once md crabs come on the other markets will fade, just ask Gene.

Gene's crabs are MD crabs once the NC truck makes a stop in MD.
