Ran our 24 traps for the first time on Friday.  They are on the North Shore of Lake Pontchartrain between Madisonville and Mandeville; had been out for 6 days.  We ended up keeping 70 nice big males, largest was 8 1/2"; better than anything I caught last year.  We had 4 kids in the boat and after pulling traps they were in charge of culling females and small males.  I noticed them about to launch a nice looking crab and made them measure it; it was just under 6".  Nice to have their perspective warped by big crabs, I made them put that one back for the ride to Baton Rouge and show me any more cull crabs before the set them free.

It was nice to make the trip in our new (to us) Carolina Skiff 218DLV.  Lots of room for the 8 people on board + crabbing and ski gear, no hot loud aluminum anymore.  I think the increased stealth will help with trotlining on choppy days.

The Lake is supposed to be great in years following the opening of the Bonnet Carre Spillway, as documented last year by Capt. Ron.  They are catching a bunch of nice specks on the causeway too.  So far so good, looks like a great season in the making!

Nice catch Kirk.  Glad to see ya back out there.  Still undecided on Wednesday.  Fishing, golfing or washing traps?  My North line needs to be picked up washed and moved.  My South line needs to be broken down and moved further East.  I guess the weather will play the biggest part.

Ronnie

BTW:  got rid of that rattle trap and got ya a FG boat.  Good move.  Where are those frogs?  I'm ready.
