To the top they hold 60 pounds.  If ya chill ya crabs ya can get 65/66.  If they are real heavy ya looking at 70.  Depends on the crabs.  Last week I sold 40 crabs that weighed 30 pounds.  Big fat males.

That's why we go by weight.

Ron How many traps do you load up in your boat when you move them?

the biggest load was 90.  Water has to be flat.  Safe load is 60.  look at the traps loaded in my picture.  that's 60.

That is a mess of crabs in the totes but for 285 traps that is probably only about 1 crab per trap?  I hope the move works out; my guess is you are good enough to zero in on them and make us poor slobs with 2 dozen traps feel un-worthy Smiley.  When you are near the north shore keep an eye out for a Carolina skiff with a PBR on the console; it's most probably me.

Even though the standard measure here is a bushel, any partial baskets were always done by weight. Everything is based on 40 lbs/bushel. The basket and lid weigh 5 lbs, so a bushel of #1's had to weigh at least 45 lbs. If a bushel of #1's was selling for $100, that would make them $2.50/lb. Any partial baskets would be weighed, subtract 5 lbs for the basket, and multiply the actual lbs by $2.50. Prices for 2's, 3's, females, etc. would all be different but the process is the same.
