dividing creek 4-14-12

went out at 8 am. only 1 truck parked at ramp. Ran 20 traps with necks and finished day with 68 keepers at around 2:30. Water temp was 52 at arrival and warmed up to 55 in afternoon. We wer e in 9-12 ft water. Talked to a couple crabbers who crabbed up creek and they had 70 keeperes crabbing by boatside. They told us they were in 6 ft. Leaves me to believe they are probably everywhere.
Crabs werent big with ave size being around 5-5-1/2 inch but they were delicious. Full of meat and very little sand. Being in brackish water, they are probably the closest to a chester river tasting crab. Meat was sweet and not fishy tasting.
did do some perch fishing but it was slow. caught 5 with only 2 being keeper size.
pic enclosed. Sticker on trailer tongue is a 2012 Kent county, md ramp sticker, so this is not an old pic for all you doubters who say you can't catch crabs till June.

Great job there! Where did you launch? I used Fortescue mostly, just to eliminate low tide trouble at BD or TP. Oops, I see DC , duh, senior moment there....I think this is all bay water, and no fresh, unless just after a rain. If the tide changes "direction" is the giveaway Joe....Not positive at DC, but others are bone dry "almost" at low....OK, maybe not that dry, but....I have seen them that low though...could walk on the bottom under the bridge at Wier Creek
...duck season on a blowout tide....

OMG Love crabing the dividing creek.... so glad they are coming baby....
Boat is almost ready - still finishing the deck and ready to paint by next weekend, got my Talbot and QA ramp permits yesterday....
Nice catch.... I was so tempted to put her in yesterday but was afraid the water was still too cold..
However, they look like they are coming!!

There is fresh water in dc. The fishing license guide for nj freshwater lists that for DC, a freshwater licecse is required from the rt 555 bridge to up stream. There are catfish caught at around the dc boat rentals. Many of the creeks in that area are brackish and require a license at some point. . They are being fed in part by the Kirkwood- cohansey aquafer. there is estimated 17 trillion gallons stored in the aquafer and has an area of 3000 sq. miles..

Not quite true. Any old-timer in South Jersey will tell you that crabs don't really run until August.
