Not to sound too negative or cheap here but does anyone have any serious suggestions for alternate crab baits for trotliners or a source for some cheaper prices for crab bait----specifically eel or lips?

Some people just don't like the way they taste, others do. Most crabs do.

I was in a pinch one time and put hotdogs in the pots off my pier. I caught white perch, a turtle and a catfish but no crabs...

That is so funny you mention using hot dogs for bait. I remember when i was a kid going to a pier with my dad. We stopped somewhere to get necks, but they were out. My dad so don't worry i know a secret bait. He bought hotdogs! We cough tons of huge crabs that day on a pier. We still joke about using hotdogs.

I think clams are pretty cheap but you do have to buy the bags first. Not too sure but you should be able to bait a 1200 ft. trotline for about 15 bucks. A half of bushel!

I went up in PA on New Year's Eve and bought 300lbs of lips for $1.09/lb because I'm betting they will be $2.00/lb by Aug.

I was at a dock a few years back waiting for my buddy to show up w/ his boat, line, bait, etc. (I brought the food and beer). I had some string and a Slim Jim. I caught half a dozen keepers in about 30 mins using 2" pieces of the Slim Jim.

Finally, a use for all the [dang] groundhogs I shoot in the field, I should've thought of that a long time ago, thanks! Do they really work, is groundhog tough enough or do they tear right thru it?
