Hello all,
I am heading down there weekend because I can't stand it any more after watching crabbing on You Tube last night! I know that is a good area to crab. May someone suggest a place to buy crabbing gear and some good locations? Thanks a bunch! DP

Go to Johnson Creek or the fishing pier at Hunting Island State Park, Station Creek, or any sea wall, sea shore or dock. You can also crab from your boat. Look for crabs close to shore in murky water and farther out in clear water. If all else fails call the Beaufort chamber of commerce. Try the internet.

Thanks. I went and got 4 crab traps and a fishing rod last night. I was thinking about the triangular metal traps but the salesman told to get the cheaper ones with aluminum rings and nylon net instead. The chicken necks and liver have maggots all over and the stench is seeping all over the neighborhood like a toxic cloud! Anyone who walks near my house is quite humbled as the smell is enough to make them bow over! I think the crabs will have a feast tomorrow! DP

Dp, I think you will find that crabs will not eat rotten bait. It simply will not work. Crabs prefer fresh food and will NOT eat spoiled anything. Someone gave you bad information. You don't have to believe me but you should get rid of that chicken and get fresh if you want to catch crabs.
http://www.altamahariverkeeper.org/aboutus/stories/bluecrabs.asp
"The food source for crabs varies widely during the early stages of the life cycle. They can eat mosquito and sand gnat eggs and larva as well as the eggs and larva of grass shrimp (palaemonetes vulgaris). As the young blue crabs become juveniles their diets graduate to include fish and other animals they capture or find dead along the bottom of the estuary. It was my experience when I was crabbing that just because a blue crab is a scavenger, as are many other types of sea life, it prefers fresh food as opposed to rotten food. Ask any commercial blue crab fisherman how many crabs he catches with only rotten bait in his traps. "

Greetings,
Thank you so much for enlighting me. Someone told me the stinkier the bait, the better. He suggested letting the meat rot for days under the hot SC sun until it drives even the hungriest flies away then it is "golden to go". I showed my girlfriend my concoction this morning and she said " I am NOT getting in your car with that stuff" followed by a second insult " I am not eating anything that eats that thing! " she concluded. So now, I am heading to Walmart to get a fresh bag of chicken wings. Thanks! DP

I found your post and sorry I didn't know you posted one. You think that is better than Hunting State Park? Thanks DP

I had hard time finding chicken necks so I grab a bag of chicken thighs instead. Next time I am at Asian meat market, I am gonna get a bag full of necks. I have some old spare ribs in the freezer that I am gonna to try and see if they like this too. DP

Thighs will work. The reason most use the neck is because it is cheap, has meat that is hard to remove easily, has a large amount of blood in it and is easy to tie on. Talk to your local grocery store butcher. They can save them for you and are usually happy to do so.

Hi again D.P., i really can't say which is better, you see I just started up again after a 2 yr hiatus due to moving here from NY. I was just letting you onto the places i know of as of yet that are in Charleston area. I live in Summerville and like to stay local. As time goes on and i stumble across other locations, ie. boat launches and shore spots i will surley pass the info along . Peace & Happy crabbing bud. Mike F.
ps. I get my necks at Piggly Wiggly & Publix, i've yet to have trouble finding any especially at the Pig. They usually have EVERY part of every animal , LOL. Later bud.

Yo all,
Yesterday I went crabbing/fishing and here it went. I got there at 9:45 and left at 5:00. The place was at the pier on Hunting Island State Park. I got only 3 (6 inch-ish, two females and one male) and others who crabbed during that time got none. I had three traps going and the bait was chicken neck, thigh. I also got about 17 hermits and 6 whelk conches. Fish wise, between my friend and I, we got 5 of various kinds. It was a very slow day but the fun of doing it is priceless. In fact I think I am heading to Charleston to crab again today. Last night I had the crabs (MY CATCH ! yeh) and they were so tasty! DP
