How should I cook crabs in a pot with no rack? I have no steamer either.

I used to steam them on the stove by using a pot with a lid and putting something in the bottom of the pot (like an upside down pie pan) to keep them off the bottom and the liquid.

I saw a tv episode (Which show???) where they put pebbles in the bottom of a pot they were steaming lobster. I am sure it would work in a pinch, just no soapstone...

WOW, rocks, bricks, pebbles, jedi powers etc..... LOL. Just get yourself a nice metal collender/strainer at any cookware shop or you can even check out the thrift stores/ goodwill shops & consignment shops. be sure it fits your pot without falling in- measure pot diameter w/ruler before shopping and ENJOY those cranky bluecrabs. Peace to all. Mike F.

Measure the diameter of your pot and find the closest replacement grill top that will fit it at Home Depot or Lowes.

upside down pie pan with holes drilled in it. This basically what mine has in it. or grill grates trimmed and bent to keep the crabs out of the lquid. A cheep pie pan might be cheaper tho.

I think the show was called "The Cannibal Flinstones from Maine". As I recall, BamBam didn't like the idea of putting Pebbles in the bottom of a pot!

:laugh:Get off me, he said in a pinch, not caveman style...and not permanent. The fact is use anything that will not burn or explode to keep them up out of the water.

Like Tom said, anything that will keep them off the bottom, out of the liquid. Otherwise, those crabs on the bottom will get mushy.

I dont use a rack, crabs on the bottom serve as my rack, I turn em upside down. Crabs on bottom are what we call "wet ones", usually the first to get grabbed at my table.
Serve them upside down, crack em and use the shell as bowl to dip meat in delicious crab au jus!

I guess you could say that for my "rack" crabs, I dont use any water though. Just a half inch or so of vinegar.

When I boil crabs I boil with tap water but season the shiz out of it. I can honestly say I like them both steamed and boiled.

I took a couple of small coffee cups and put them in the bottom of the pot. I used beer and viniger and some JO#2 and it worked great. His wife had a fit when she came in the kitchen and crabs were running around and we were digging through the kitchen looking for her good cook wear lol.
