Thanks everyone. The handlines have proven to work pretty well for me in the kayak. Even with box traps I have the best luck on just plain ol chicken. I use 6-8 and by the time I check the last one and drift back its usually time to check the first string again.

Thanks, my dad has had that piece of wood for over 30 years and never had anything to use it for just saved it because he thought it was cool. We were both happy the way that this turned out! Since I have several people ask, I wrote up another entry in my blog and posted a video at the end of it that explains the techniques and gear that I use to crab in the kayak. Let me know if you have anymore questions. http://laserfishing.blogspot.com/2012/05/how-to-set-up-kayak-for-crabbing.html

Great video. I may have to go get a Kayak myself. I'm just not patient enough to do the pier crabbing thing anymore...plus a little exercise wouldn't hurt either!

Do you use an anchor? I always end up drifting , and when I'm pulling the line up it is almost always UNDER the boat instead of to the side.

Jeff, No I do not anchor... I go against the current to pick them up. I approach the float with a little bit off speed (barely a glide) and let that get me right over top of it or a little ahead of it. If you are facing directly in the current and pulling on your left side, make your last paddle stroke on that side and your bow will catch the current and start to spin you around to the right which leaves the bait coming off your boat rather than under. If that makes sense.

Jimmy on Chicken, You did an awesome job on the video. You seem like you're a pro or something as you take us around the kayak slow. You have me excited to go and get a GoPro cam for my kayak now. Just wondering what software you're using to edit. This is my first year Kayak Crabbing and am loving more than ever. Wife is Pregnant and is soon giving up going with me, so need to refine my ways. Great job again

Congrats on the kid! The kind of computer you have makes a big difference with editing software because they are specific for PC or MAC. Im using a MAC and the majority of my videos have been made on the basic iMovie that comes on the computer. I believe PC has something similar called Windows Movie Maker. I highly recommend just using the standard software to start with because they are made to be very user friendly. I have access to another MAC that has Final Cut Pro on it and its basically iMovie with a lot more options. I avoided this when I first started because it was so confusing but I'm starting to understand it a little more now that I have made several videos.
Thanks for the compliments, you'll love the GoPro. I had no experience with any of this video stuff until Jan and the learning curve is pretty quick. If you ever need a partner to go with let me know.

Wow - really awesome...not just crabs, but the whole video/music/images. I usually crab out of my 9' dingy with a 6hp Merc. Small, but nice in that I am so low to the water and very easy to maneuver. Been thinking about getting a kayak or two for me + wife - would welcome your thoughts (probably best on a private message so we do not bore everyone to death) about a good entry level 'yak' as I guess they are called. (not planning on crabbing, more for exercise and bird watching). Keep it up, and although I was skunked on the Miles River two weeks ago - I'll be trying again this week somewhere between Kent Narrows/Rock Hall/Chester River MD...thanks again for a very inspiring video - goes well with a cold beer (ok, two!!)

Nice job on the video and crabs. I am looking to buy a Kayak soon as well. Looking for a few good ideas. From the place I'm going to crab to the place I'm going to park is only going to be about 50 yards away. I was going to set up traps and put about 5 to 10 on the kayak at a time. Go back and pick up more traps until I get all the traps out. I would think with 30 traps out it would take me some time to get through a run and it would be time to start again by the time I was done.
