Stone Crab question
«
on:
June 11, 2012, 11:33:47 AM »
I've caught one in 20 year that i can remember...Are they generally in deeper water?...I've crabbed in the panhandle (FL) all my life from {Panama City, Destin to Mexico Beach and remember catching one in the St Andrews Marina years ago...Are they typically not common in the warmer panhandle in Florida?? Thanks in advance

Hopefully someone will answer your question that knows the answer and area.
They are common by me south of Daytona on the northeast coast.
They are common down in the keys.
I don't see why they wouldn't be more common by the panhandle area.

We catch them here from 3' to 50'. Not too many true Fl(with the thumb print) stone crabs west of Apalachicola or up the east coast, not enough to be harvested commercially that is.

Big difference on the bottom in those 45 minutes. What part of Albany you from? I went to a high school reunion there last weekend. I graduated Dougherty High in 1978.

Jay,
There is a member,R D, on this site that hasn't been active lately, but lives in St. Marks Florida, I think that is considered the beginning of the Panhandle. He has a commercial Stone Crab business along with harvesting Blue crabs. I know he does very well during Stone Crab season.
Hope this helps.
