have you tried them? is the taste the same?
Personally, I tried one from my first crabbing catch. I caught Blue Crab along with Spider Crabs on my first try, so I decided to cook 1 of the bigger Spider Crabs that I caught along with Blue Crab. I actually thought that the body/carapace area meat from the Spider Crab was quite nice, with a sweet difference from the Blue Crab's body/carapace meat. I wasn't as much into diggin' around its smaller, sort of "hairy" claws though. They were good, but it was weird drawing out the meat from the slightly "hairy" claw covering that the Spider Crabs have. I decided to mainly focus on the Blue Crabs for what I'll choose to keep most often from now on. That considered, the Spider Crabs shouldn't be wiped off the platter yet; they'll be good to keep/eat from time to time still. I love seeing all kinds of crabs, while eating the right ones here or there.

What Long Islander's call spider crabs may be totally different from what people in Florida call spider crabs. Post pics if you say they are tasty,so we here on long island can be sure we are talking about the same thing.
After crabbing here in Florida I managed to catch them and take a few pictures of them on my cellphone. My mother grew up as a child in Long Island and I sent her a few text pics of my first crabbing catch just for her to see all the fun that I was having. Shortly after that, I got a text back from her and she enjoyed seeing my pics (especially of the Spider Crab), talking back in response of how she remembered the fun she had catching Spider Crabs early on in Long Island. In other words, my mother knew what a Spider Crab really looked like, ya see?

This was discussed a while ago. In a previous post, someone said that they found some info saying spider crabs are related to the snow (tanner) crab, or something like that. So except for its' gross looks, the spider crab is not bad eating. I'll stick to regularly accepted species, thank you very much....

Some one posted here a while ago about eating Spider Crabs and that the larger crab claws were not bad tasting.
I caught a really big one in my Lobster traps right after that and was gonna try it.
Nope! I let him go.
If times get tough I may give it a try. Not until then though!

He'd probably stick with the bugs and rodents (atleast for the show) more often. Spider Crabs ain't bad though. Perhaps the cook just wasn't doing them right for those that ignore/dislike 'em, correct?

I don't want to see them when they are alive and unprepared. Like monkfish, it doesn't look very appetizing when its alive..tastes great cooked though..

^ To each his own.
I just gotta say that I was neither scared of how they looked (when I caught them during my first crabbing session) nor was I scared on seeing how they'd taste. Cooked properly, they can be quite good like how the Spider Crab was on my plate. Maybe it's just the name for a lot of people...
...being scared of Spiders and all...lol?
As far as I'm concerned, just about ANY insect would/could "creep" me out before a Spider Crab ever had the chance. Oh well. Everybody has their own ways.

I'll choose a Spider Crab (dead or alive) over a Monkfish any day of the week! No offense to the Monkfish though...lol.
Apparently other people really love 'em too. Enough to make a sign/shirt for it, ya see?

Monkfish are very good table fare! It's often called poor mans Lobster.
I don't personally see or taste the connection though.
Tastes like fish to me!
I did use Spider crabs for scungelli bait. They worked great!

I still don't really consider lobster all that great. I mean, I will eat it if it's provided (especially for free), but I won't pay a lot or search out just to have it all the time, ya know?
I prefer crab over lobster of course, but I also prefer crawdads and several other things over the basic lobster dish. Flounder and Blue Crabs (or even some nice crawdads) are quite a bit tastier than most "treats" from the ocean, especially lobster, but that's just me. To each his own, but I'll trade you my fresh caught lobster for your fresh caught Blue Crabs any day of the week. Period!
