My dad is a great trout fisherman and taught me how to read a river.  Unfortunately, the streams of northern PA are far from the Chesapeake.  I am trying to learn how to read river/creek tributaries for higher crab densities and areas that are more favorable for placement of my traps than others.  This will be my second year rec crabbing, and it's a blast.  Any insight would be much appreciated from those in the know.

I live in Carroll county, md and crab the western side.  I have been staying in the tributaries south of route 50.  My small aluminum bass boat does not take kindly to the chop or blowing wind.  I was thinking, like trout fishing, finding the drop offs and currents where bait would naturally be gathered, that would be a good spot to try and find for the traps.  Difference being the current changes vs. A stream, but tattoo, the depth seems to be more important than bait concentration?

Good to know there is another trout fisherman on board....  Grin  Vary your depths til you start to catch tem and keep in mind the temps and salinity is important, but most of all is the Tide movement....  DNR has a tide calculator that is helpful for MD,  I have attached the link... I like the last 2 hours of th eincoming tide and then the ebb to the first hour of the  outgoing..... sometimes you may catch them on one side of a river or point etc and then when the tide ebss and turns it may go dead and then the other side becomes active...... tide is real important and something you don't have to consider with trout fishing...
