Been running a million design scenarios through my head. Aquired a few kegs and want to start soon. I have someone who can fabricate a steam basket or I can get a bayou classic steam basket that will fit. I am leaning towards having a basket instead of a tray on the bottom. I can get the steam cranking while I layer crabs in basket with seasoning. Then put the basket in and wait. Then remove the basket and dump. Just looking for thoughts and pros and cons on having a basket. Thanks, Shedhunta

I have a 1/2 keg steamer for years - I place a rack on the bottom of mine - I must load and unload mine by individual crabs - no one has even complained - it is a pain sometimes and a blessing at others.
Anything about crabbing normally comes down to individual preference, family tradition, costs or folk lure. There are few rights and wrongs other then the law - what suits your fancy is as good as it gets.

I have a Bayou Classic with the removable steam basket. I prefer the steam basket, because it's more convenient then removing steamed crabs one by one, especially when you have a decent amount of crabs. After cleaning a bushel of crabs (I clean before cooking) and putting them in the steamer and seasoning them all you have to do when they are done is dump them out of the basket. But like DP said, it's all a matter of personal preference.

I also like using a basket. I can steam about 1/2 bushel at a time. About the time the first batch is all gone the second batch is ready. Carrying a full hot basket of crabs and dumping them on the table in front of everyone is priceless On a side note I left my keg whole and just cut the top out. I can still use it as a turkey fryer, soup kettle, and most important I boil my butchered deer carcass for dog food(wife loves that

You can probably take those kegs to a liquor store and get enough money to buy a large stainless steel pot with basket.
I've been a metal scrapper for a long time. I came across an empty 1/2 keg that was in very nice condition. Scrap yards won't take them where I live. I took it to a liquor store and got $20.00 for it!

I've been through several aluminum pots and a SS pot as well....nothing will hold up like a Keg.
My kegs don't have baskets. As long as it would still hold a bushel I would prefer the basket.....that way when they're done I can get em' out of the heat and cool em' down.

only welds on a keg steamer if you do it right is a few spot welds on 4 " L " tabs about ^" up from the bottom.. a keg already has handles .. plasma out the top and make a flat stainless lid and make a 2pc. grate...works like a charm

Just a thought.
Could ya'll be using too much flame when you steam? (visions of Tim Allen)
Since there is water with impurities (seasoning) in the bottom and a small amount of pressure (lid), I would think that the water temp would not go above 230 no matter how much fire you put on it.

The only time I have had "good stainless" go bad was when it was welded on or way over heated. Fp I have a keg setup like yours so I'll have wait and see if it springs a leak. I sure hope not I'll have to drink another keg empty and that would just be terrible
