Howdy,
Just lost my business. Have a very few bucks $$. Figure I will donate them to a worthy cause and try my hand at commercial crabbing - probably will lose what little I have but dont really have anything else that interests me so here goes. Recently paid way too much for a 900 pot commercial license. Looking for a 40 plus foot fiberglass hull boat, with a reasonable hours/condition diesel preferably rigged already for pots. Still learning all involved as far as where to get and how to modify pots, where to set them, best way to run them individually or on a line, bait etc. Yes I am the stupid fair haired boy who is going to try and make a living without having the 500 years of experience and multiple generations of being a waterman.  That all being said, I really appreciate the opportunity to obtain information without being brow beaten on the docks - at least on here it doesnt sting quite as much. Realize this site seems to be primarily aimed at recreational crabbers, but the info has been extremely helpful to me. Hopefully with the good advice, or atleast seems to be reasonable advice on this site - I can possibly slide in the 1 in 100 and make a good living for my family. PS - I am looking for an experienced crabber to help assist getting my operation up and going - if you know of anyone please message me. Thanks again

There are plenty of commercial crabbers here.   Post questions you may have in the Watermen sub-forum.   Good luck.

Dude

I know you were backed into a corner by losing your business but you took the leap I think many of us wish we had the gonads to take. I wish you the best! I would love to quit the corporate grind and live off of the water. That’s a dream of mine….I know the grass always seems greener on the other side but not many people would jump into it like you did. You’re going for it, doing something you want to do. Succeed or fail, at least you tried! Good luck to you man!

You must have talked to the same guy I did. He told me how to make a million bucks by crabbing. He said the best thing to do was begin with 4 million and stop just before you have 1 million left.

He also swore it would work every time.

Thanks guys.  Certainly didnt expect that reaction.  Thought I was gonna get buried by the good ole boys network. I could not be happier about my investment in this site and look forward to hopefully being able to help grow it. Yes, my family (especially my inlaws), former employees, pretty much everyone but my kids - think I am crazy.  Guess time will tell. Gonna kinda watch from a far until my license is solidified so if I am quiet it isnt for anything other than I dont want to rock the boat.

PS - Dreampixel - Sounds like I wont be making a million $$ in the crab business.. Based on your buddy's math - Ill be rounding out a good year with a cool $10K - that should just about cover my divorce which is no doubt on the horizon with this venture

I hear ya but who doesn't dream? How cool would it be to make a living doing something you love...that's where I was going with it. I hope the guy makes it!

I'm on it with ya - however my experience has been as a hobby I loved it - when it become my job - well there was times when I really did not want to do it but had too.

Right now I am in a dilemma with the same - as I approach retirement I ponder when should I tear down the Circus Tent and say the Show is over, or should I continue as I really do enjoy what I do most of the time and know I would miss it - but there are those times when I would rather be doing something else.

I also wished I had become a Gynecologist - what fun, how exciting, but then it came to me - the troubled ones would be all that visited me.............. laugh laugh laugh

I'm with you on the hobby vs. job thing... I hate my job, absolutely hate it! But, I make very good money so I'm stuck... I use the hobby as a job thing as a dream to get me through...
