Crabbing is in my blood

How do you guys do on the orange county portion of the river. I searched all the posts about the hudson on this forum but came up with very little besides "bear mountain bridge" mumbo jumbo. What conditions get the crabs to the area fastest? im assuming little rain and warm weather (terrible for my trout) and is there some sort of problem on the orange county side. Of course the west chester/putnam side is more populated therefore more posts but what of the beautiful opposite side of the river.

Im talking shore crabbing as well. Is it possibly too deep? too shallow? too many/too little freshwater influences. my experience has been in the barnegat bay which rain conditions and temp mean little to me, im on vacation im gonna crab and fish no matter.

But after finding out that the hudson river is not only beautiful but can be crabbed im elated!! i work next to the hudson amist argueabley some of the most beautiful scenery in the world.

ive been reaching out on this site with minimal information given back. I can be a valueable resource to this site, my knowledge of rivers/ponds/creeks/ ANY body of water in the area is already vast due to the internet and my travels, but the hudson intimidates me. Its almost like learning the little tidbits of knowledge from fishing the area and then being thrown into sweeden and told to find out everything in a 2-3 week period (time im assuming the crabbing will start if it hasent already)

I love big numbers but just seeing a crab in my trap will suffice. Specifically the area from the mouth of the moodna creek (i can travel further north of course) south to where civilization starts again in rockland.

im going to hear the following places
Piermont
Peekskill
Newburgh
possibly Iona island?

but im an off the beaten path/seclusion loving guy. What are the rules of crabbing off the railroad tracks the follow the hudson's west bank? all the little town/county/state parks open to access? (donahue in cornwall is a parking permit required place) And can anyone shed any unsaid in the post's light on the fact that there are so little reports from a side of the hudson where my westchester neighbors seem to do so well!!! I want a hudson river bushel!!!

My grandfather was an amazing crabber and passed it on to me. I wish he knew how good I would one day become.

Some excellent questions.....I agree   You dont see much about the west side of the river.  Being I am from the East side of the river I don't have the answer but would love to see some Rockland / Orange county crabbers post. Grin

hello there, fellow orangers. I'm a new crabber, just over a little 2 yrs. crabbing. been going between newburg and beacon. have had some luck on both sides of the bridge. today, my brother and I went down to the piermont pier and he caught 3 keepers male in 4 hrs. I didn't catch one. last week I caught 3 between the newburg and beacon side. on the newburg side is a small dock and on the beacon side is a park named long dock park which you can fish and crab from. last week some guy caught a very good size catfish from that park. as far as railroad tracks. I hear they're considered private property of the railroad company and that you can be fined or arrested for trespassing. not sure how dilligent they are about this. was thinking about chancing it to find a quiet spot.

You ought to try Bear Mountian. I did. And I can tell you It's far from Mumbo Jumbo.
