Indian River Blue Gold...

Ignore
« on: May 30, 2012, 07:50:39 PM »

First weekend back on the I.R. crabbing since 2006, and boy I forgot how much I missed it. Crabbing I.R. since probably 5 years old (over 30 years ago) with my Dad, like he did with his. So we were out Sat, Sun & Mon, somewhere between Oak Orchard and Massey's Ditch. Dumped pots in and headed to handlining Sat. Total 8...definetely not great, but nice bright blue boys and enough to cook and eat. Sunday brought us 8 again on lines and 17 in two pots. Mixed bag boy & girl, boys again nice...no less than 6", mature females in the 5" area. Sunday looked like a three-peat, with hand lines stopping again at 8. Turns out it was only a stall. 6 more came aboard totaling 14, 12 being 6" plus big blues with pearl white bottoms, 3 being peelers. Seperate they went & off to the pots we went, yielding 26 more mixed. Threw back probably a dozen sponges and dozen babies male & female all weekend. All in all a great haul after six years away. Hope it keeps up, but according to new (new to us anyway) depth finder, water temp was between 78 - 82 all weekend. I'm not a genius, but don't think hot tub temps are real condusive to crabs living a great life. Well, got some crab to eat so be safe, keep em' legal and don't steal my spot!
