2013 season - 4.25 bushel total - 4 trips

Ignore
« on: June 04, 2012, 11:37:37 AM »

went down the wye 6.3.12 got there about 4:35am and the parking lot was packed with trailers.  I am new to boating but not crabbing - bought a 17 kencraft this year and boy did I have problems putting her in the water, not use to backing up a trailer let alone with a boat on it...  so my father told me to get out of the way and whipped her right in.  went about 1 mile pass the wooden bridge on then to the left and dropped my one 600' line of necks in the cove and another 600' line of bull lips in 6 feet of water.  crabman told me to be in 8 feet of water near the channel but i didn't listen (lol) so we ran our line and caught about 9 crabs through 3 hours, wasn't good.  so we moved little futher out to-wards the middle and a commercial crabber who was running a 1/2 mile line came to me and told me to move my line I was inside of him but I didn't think that I was that close, no problem I respect all so so I pulled the line and ran it closer in and nothing....  so after all this time with 9 crabs, we decided to pull the lines in and go to where I normally crab.  so when we got there, a guy was pulling in his lines and when he was done, stopped over to talk and I asked, if he was done and figured he didn't have any, so low and behold he just wrapped up his second basket (in where I always crab - never make that mistake not crabbing my honey hole) so I dropped my lines for 2-3 runs and got 15-18 crabs.   I will never blow by my spot anymore.  My son told me to crab there, but I decided something different.  Long story short we ended up with over 2 dozens crabs were all nice size 6-8inches, one was 8 picture has 8" crab on the right, the boat ran great, need to adjust my propstick, and learn to back the trailer up.  all in all a good first time out, but could have been way better.  son missed about 10 crabs but I think that was do to not having my prop stick at right height - but it is a learning experience.

There were 3 comm in that area I got out there at 4:30am and one was in my honey hole right up through the channel. But what are you going to do.

A little trick to help if you're just learning how to back a trailer - put your hand on your steering wheel at the bottom in the 6 o'clock position - if you want the trailer to back to the right, move your hand to the right to turn the wheel.

You were close to me and I saw that comm. guy over where you are talking about.  I was over on the western side straight across and out of the wind, it was flat calm.  Wish you would of had the chance to stop by, there was plenty of room over there.  Actually this time I was doing better in a little deeper water, like 12ft.  Crabs were big like your pic. shows.  I got 45 and just about a bushel maybe about 8 good crabs short!  I cant figure out how to post them but I will get my friend to show me.  Have them on my facebook page.  Traps still doing better then line but guess that will change soon.  I have not used my line yet but watching some others I will stick with my traps for a few more weeks.  As for the crabs they were a little bit thin on the shell but big and tasty. I have about 18 mumbos left and wish I would of taken a measuring tape because 2 of those crabs were close to 9 inches.

Beat me to it Mikie.  The trailer will "follow" the bottom of the steering wheel.

Finksburg, take it out to a parking lot and practice.  And try to ignore the people looking at you going, "What the heck is that guy doing?!"

Go to a parking lot (church / shopping center etc.) and play around backing

up that rig.  Usually Sunday afternoon is best time.  It's just like learning to

ride a bicycle -----> You have to  DO  IT  to learn how  and  just remember

NO ONE was born knowing how to backup a trailer.     We all had to learn.
