You guys know about water quality in Jamaica Bay? I know it's closed to shellfish harvesting, but what about fishing/crabbing? Also if anyone knows of good crab/oyster/clammin spots within an hour's drive of Brooklyn I'd love to know!

Fishing and crabbing in Jbay is fine. Just no clams.

Jamaica Bay is actually much cleaner than most people think. I know lots of people that fish and crab down there, never had any problems with quality.

I went twice in the past week and I caught nothing, while others were catching right next to me.
I believe my bunker is the problem because my freeze went out on a power surge for a few days and the bunker I caught were defrosted.
I just kept them because I didn't think it would make a difference to the crabs, but now I see that it does.
Fresh bunker out crabs old stale refrozen bunker.

Fresh bait always outcrabs old bait. Same with chicken...

Well as wendy's said..."Fresh never frozen!"
I used chicken a few weeks ago, had a lot left over, froze it, and used it again this week and had my best day of the season. Who knows? I might start using old sneakers!

Crabbed two days ago and caught only 4 keepers around 5"-6" in 4hours. I guess the crabs are being over harvested at the bridge.
I did see thousands of snappers none of which were taking bait/spoon/crank bait. They were feeding splashing out of the water, but wont bite on any lure or freshly caught spearing.

Went again yesterday 5 crabs 3hours. Those "snappers" I saw before were not "snappers" after all. I caught one in crab trap and it turned out to be a Northern Kingfish. This explains why they were not biting lures or bait. https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/531651_10100148135207914_668645377_n.jpg

2 crab 4hours +1 cocktail blue 10mins + I locked my keys in the trunk LOL 1.5hours and I scratched up the upholstery and doors The blues were out in the evening feeding on peanut bunker. I was about to leave and I decided to use a spoon with my last 10mins to see what I came up with. I hooked 4 only one made the journey up to the bridge; the rest fought hard and came off the hook

Jbay is getting cleaner, but I won't eat anything out of it, catch and release for me...more for you guys/gals! Reminds me when I did some research in the gowanus canal, and founds TONS of blues in the traps...none for me thanks...BTW the Gowanus is getting cleaner, but it has been the dirtiest waterway in NYC...

Yea I've heard about the Gowanus it has tons of commercial business and traffic, and it is an inlet. I would not catch and eat anything from there. I've read about "wastewater treatment plants" dumping in Jamaica bay, but there conservation focuses on the nitrogen content in the water. Pollution affects every place on earth directly or indirectly, so even by avoiding eating fish/crab caught at Jamaica bay your still getting your fill of pollutants.
