what crabs do in a basket ...they do underwater.....FIGHT ....  plus they could hang up in shedding and lose them.  Its common ;0

A crab will "throw" one or both of his claws as a natural defense system. Or, there's a crabber in your area who mistakes blue claws for stone crabs... laugh laugh laugh

As to crabs with half a claw.  They may have  been in a fight.

Maybe someone thought they were stone crabs, caught them, took a claw, and returned 'em   laugh

if you look at a light crab wrong he'll, drop a limb, its a natural defense when they in that state. i think crabs know when crabs are vulnerable.

I surprisingly caught a crab without its claws last time out. I almost felt bad for him...ALMOST. He tasted good.

if they are missing both claws we call them pucks, very common.they still manage to eat without them.and they still taste as good.

I always like the name "Pocket Crab".  Tell any newbies on the boat that they have to stick it in their pocket.

I caught a crab yesterday with a swimmer fin on one side and 1 leg on each side.  It was a paper shell.  I put it back gently and hope he makes it.  He was hanging on a trotline but I am not exactly sure how...

They got to remind you of Monty Pythons' Back Knight Scene - I know it does me.
