Not a huge quanitiy like this same week last year, but the size more than made up for the numbers....

Was boat #1 out of Trixies at 6:02am on Saturday....made it to first spot in 15 minutes at the edge of a well-known spot...current was ripping....my son and I used 10 hand lines, baited with fresh bunker from this past weeks striper trip, and some chicken backs....first 15 minutes was nada, and I thought we were in for a bad day.

Then things changed...might have been the tide slowing a bit; not sure.  We net one....then another...each one drew a comment like, "Man! Thats a monster!"

It wasnt double and triple-headers like last year from this spot, but we managed 7...then we made 4 wiggles around the location and banged a similar amount at each.....got invaded by cocktail blues and caught some beauts on ultralight tackle....perfect 1 1/2 pound size for blackened filets later that afternoon.

Tide dropped, and so did both the fish and crab action, so we decided to move closer to the shallows...good decision. It seemed like each place we hit would produce a half dozen or so....all, repeat: ALL, were big crabs. Out of 55 that we scooped, 54 were brutes. One was thrown back. Some seemed to have that "just got out of the mud" brown color; about half didnt....only 2 females on the day. All were surprisingly full of meat for so early in the season....

Not a lot of boat traffic at all.....more crabbers at the park pier than on the water.....we were back at the dock early, and I was boiling crabs at 1:00pm.....had a blast with my son and couldnt ask for a nicer day.

Great report, love heading out of Trixie's in that area.  If I recall, 2 years ago I was out during this time of year and it was all very nice Jimmies.  Come August the Sooks start rolling in.
