Made the first trip of the year today. Decided to make the run to King Pond and Striaght creek area of Cumberland County. Nice Breeze and strong tide kept the bugs at bay and the crabs moving. It is a fairly long boat ride no matter where you launch from, but the plus side is you rarely see another crabber.
Crabbed with 6 foxy mates and 6 handlines. This area is largley shallow flats and for some reason the crabs are always very shy of the traps. The handlines outcaught the traps by far and also yielded the larger crabs.
Water temps were 74 degrees. Bait of choice was old duck legs saved from last waterfowl season. Ended the day with about 6 dozen, most between 5"-6". Also had alot of 5+ whitey throwbacks. They must just be coming off the shed. Bodes well for later in the season. Best of luck, Jode

Thanks for the report Nice job on the crabs  Always wanted to try kings pond but your right thats one heck of a ride to get there Plus i am told it is shallow at low tide would hate to get stuck I am sure someone would come past (around duck season) |

Straight creek and King Pond are about a 20-30 min run by fast boat from beaver dam. maybe 4-5 miles as the crow flies. Longer following the creeks. Follow the down the Oranoak.
Only problem is as Skiff said, shallow and different routes for low and high water. At normal low tide there is NO water......just an expansive mudflat.
I've been stuck there before as I am sure alot of guys have been too. If your out there enough it happens. Believe me you only do it once. LOL. As long as it's not cold and you don't freak out it just a waiting game.
Beaver dam should be good tommorow. I stopped up that way on my way back in and picked up a few nice ones on the handlines in very litte time.

Sure thing guys. Had about 2 dozen last night with my son. Plenty more for the rest of the weekend. It will be nice when he is old enough to pick them himself! LOL!

You "can" run in where I marked, in yellow, on Okranoken Creek, but the tide has to be up...I ran from Fortescue a lot and still ran out to the bay on a north wind then in to King...Easier in the dark too  I hunted this area a lot. I've seen a guy walk from Fishing Creek to False Egg, then he was stuck till next low tide King is just a mud flat...Saw some people @ Double A years back that were stuck somewhere in these creeks and they were covered in mud and fly bites. The woman would not even get out and help load or talk to her hubby Guess she figured it was his fault...I posted that story a few years ago....Hunted in here with Bob B and Buckshot some Jodi...Sure you know Bob.. |

Yep, Know Snowgoose Bob well. No one loves that area more than him. Ole Buckshot passed a few years back. But Bob did right by him sending him to rest in one of their favorite places. I think the thing I like the best about those area's is the solitude. If it wasn't for the occasoinal plane or boat , it could be 300 years ago.

The creek to the left of King is Straight creek. The big horseshoe bend just before you get to the bay is a great area. It has a nice beach at low tide. Saw a big theresher shark thier several years back. With it tail it was longer than my 12' sneakbox.............

I know exactly where you mean on the bayfront...We would pull the boat on the creek side then just over the hill to the bay side....20yds?..Put out a bunch of outlaw decoys and move out in the bay and hide in the little nooks and crannys when low water. Those snows would never suspect a thing. Yes, I saw on Bobs fb that he passed...CO checked us one time out there and he made Bob chain ole Buckshot up...lol

Yes, I have taken that route before. It can get dicey in a small boat if the weather comes up, but it is quicker if the bayfront is calm. Also can get shallow in a bigger boat. I prefer the iside route via boiler ditch, but it is a bit longer. Either way it is an adventure!

I admire your determination Jode. I've traveled to spots out of that area but never that far, and not across the bay front. Many times I have a plan in mind and start the trek but if the traps are baited I start thinking about all the area we're covering and start rethinking and then say... let stop and drop and see what happens... and the plan goes out the window with the first Jimmie!  |

Good haul, Jode! I remember well 'way back in the 80's, going up those creeks from the bay on those rough windy days, just to let my stomach settle down. One day I nearly capsized on a shoal at the creek mouth.  We caught lotsa weakies on that Southwest Line... You're right...it is a long ride. I always took along a spare gas tank and a really big lunch. |

You're right...it is a long ride. I always took along a spare gas tank and a really big lunch. Ran out of gas up near Sheepkill Pd in Feb while picking up hunting "gear" from duck season. Luckily there was a gentleman with his son, snow goose hunting, that I managed to get attention by firing some shots....got some gas from them |
