Hey everyone,

Decided to go down to Bay Park yesterday to catch the outgoing tide. Brought 6 traps and within the first 10 minutes I already had 3. Over the next two and a half hours I managed to catch a total of 14 crabs in the 5-6 inch range. Had about 12 throwbacks (4 sponges and 8 that were far too small). Looking to go back in a week or two to see how I can do.

I was using four door box traps my dad and I made quite a while ago.

Just go into Bay Park and find the boat launch area. Right next to it is a few hundred feet of bulkhead that everybody crabs from.

No problem. Check the tide chart before you go. You want some water movement. I'd go at the start of the incoming.

Here's the tide chart I've been using this year. http://tides.mobilegeographics.com/locations/1718.html

You are better off using the tide chart for East Rockaway, not the East Rockway Inlet like you are using now. If you look at the map the inlet is not that close to East Rockaway. Bay Park is actually in Oceanside, which is right next to East Rockaway. Using tomorrow as an example, the low tide for the East Rockaway Inlet is 12:06 PM. The low tide for East Rockaway is 1:07 PM. So you have an hour in variation.

Oh, and just to clarify. They call it the East Rockaway Inlet because it is right at the boarder of Nassau County and Queens. When you get into Queens it is called the Rockaways. But it has nothing to do with East Rockaway which is in Nassau County. And East Rockaway is the closest town to Bay Park that they register the tide. If you can find a tide chart for Oceanside, that would be perfect. Now I am confused  laugh laugh laugh

When are you planning on dropping your trap(s)? My boat is docked in Oceanside, only a few minutes away from Bay Park. I dropped 2 overnight traps off my boat last week and caught a couple of nice sized keepers, but it really wasn't a spectacular catch. Hopefully as the water temp rises, the crab will become active. I might go out Tuesday with a dozen topless traps and see if the catch is better than last week. Going to have a bait competition to see which bait gets the better bite. 6 traps will have chicken necks and the other 6 will have Bunker chunks. Good Luck.

Well, I'm hoping to get back out in a week or two but not sure if I'll be able to. I live about 30 minutes from Bay Park and don't have a boat so I'm limited to piers however sometimes my friend takes me out on his boat. I'd love to be able to drop an over night pot in the water but I wouldn't trust anyone not to steal it. I might actually try Wantagh Park my next outing to see how I do. I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to catch any last Saturday. I usually don't start crabbing until the end of June/early July. I've always had better luck with bunker chunks rather than chicken, but that's just me. Good luck Tuesday and let me know how you do with the bait test.

Last summer I started crabbing towards the end of June as well. The catch was pretty good right up until the Hurricane. After the storm, the crabbing never recovered. It was pretty disappointing, but that's the way it goes. I'll let you know about the bait test, but I would agree regarding the bunker beating out the chicken necks. The scent of the nice and oily Bunker is always a plus. I'm planning on trying a few new spots that I have been scouting out between Island Park and Point Lookout. Their is plenty of grassy marshland out there to try. And since I have 14' flat bottom skiff I can get in and out of most places pretty easily. I also like the fact that the start of the incoming tide is in the early afternoon right now, so I don't have to get up early Smiley
