Ok, I have searched old thread, and I haven't quite found the information I'm looking for.

I store my trotline in a 5 gallon bucket, UNBAITED. When I went to bait up for my last trip, boy did that thing stink. I had a couple of necks in there, so that didn't help things at all. I had some mold growth from the residue from the necks from the previous use. I also had a few maggots from the decomposed necks that mistakenly were stored in there.

My question is related to storing the trotline in a brine. Previous threads concern the storage on baited lines in brine.

Would I be ok storing my UNBAITED line in a salt brine to keep the line from moldy & stanky? I thought about water & bleach, but I would think that would have a negative effect on crabbing. I think the salt should work just fine, but I thought I'd ask you more experienced guys.

I keep all of my unbaited lines in orange baskets.  Depending on the bait, baited lines either go in salt or the freezer if I dont plan to use them in a day or two.

You need to store your wet line in a container with more ventilation. If able to dry out, most of your problems will stop, as long as there are no baits left on the line.

I agree.  Store unbaited in a ventilated container or rolled up and hung out.  Salt or freeze a baited one. If you freeze depending on your time from house to water the ride and a little warm water from the river once your on the boat usually thaws it out enough to get it set.

Thanks for the tips. I'll seek a more suitable storage solution!

My line stays baited and frozen in a 5 gal bucket. I even keep it frozen all off season.

As I unbait mine, I coil it into a bushel basket. Then it sits outside for a day or so. The ants and flies pick it clean. Then I coil it into another basket. So it flips it upside down to finish drying, sorta. I like to go out in the garage in the winter and give it a good sniff. Smells like victory.

Man youall have some small lines if you can store in a 5 gallon bucket. i keep 2 lines in in 2, 32 gallon cans and 2 lines in 2, 20 gallon cans. In the end i rather have yourbait bill instead of mine.

1200 of direct tie on #4 locktite can fit in a 5 gal bucket.  my 1200' softlay lines barely fit in an orang basket if baited with fowl.  600' in an orange basket if baited with clams.
