Not to mention the odor that permeates the whole house. I like Old Bay as much as the next guy, but I still remember the time I was stuck in traffic in front of the McCormick factory. I steam outside ever since.

All 3... Depends on how many crabs I'm doing, which pot I'm using and what I feel like doing at the moment.

Inside and Out. Depends on how many and what the occasion is. Parties are outside. If only a few people or crabs usually inside. It can get a little funky depending on where the crabs were caught.

Quantity becomes the issue for me also - 1/2 bushel or more - outside in the big steamer - a few dozen could be outside or in side - much smaller kettle.
Its hard to get a 1/2 keg on my stove top

Steam outside!
I'm paying good money to air condition the house, and I'm not having it all heated/steamed up - not to mention the lingering smell

Inside. But now that I'm catching more, I'm seriously contemplating a propane burner/steamer. My steamer that I use now only has holes at the bottom of the pot (opposed to a true steamer that has the basket with holes all the way to the top). So when my steamer is packed, it takes a while for the top crabs to get cooked. Takes like 45 minutes for me to steam 3 dozen. (I know ur reading and thinking "oh man thats way too long...they're over cooked. But trust me...it does for me)

Some of the reason that it's taking so long is you may not be getting enough heat - the outside propne burner is a lot hotter than my kitchen gas stove burner. We use those black speckled enamel two part steamers (we have two) and the crabs are done in 25 minutes or less.

The next poll should be what do you wear while crabbing hat, camo crocs, an apron...... etc......

Just depends we cook them inside sometimes and sometimes when we do a big boil we will do it outside, and lay a ton of paper across the picnic table, and just throw everything from the boil on the table.

Apron for sure, no doubt a hat (or I'd be Lobster Woman), and water shoes so I can tromp into the ramp to pull the boat up. Might get me a pair of crocs, but I want pink or yellow
And - Shut up, Crabdog!
