Went to the Wye Saturday and caught 1 8" crab and one 7' crab and here's Wye.

1. Laid trotline and it was too slack. Didn't get anything first run.

2. Pulled trotline tight and buoy on other end sank withoutme noticing and when I let go of the buoy I was holding it also sank. I just realized I lost my trotline. Spent and hour looking for it and was about to drive to the mouth to start fishing and realized I can troll for it. Did that and found it within 15 minutes.

3. Decided to try shallower water just in case I lose my line again so I went from 10' to 5' of water. Found a creek and laid my line parallel to the creek but it went too far and extended into the river by 100 feet. I did not see any buoys nearby and did not see anyone trotlining so I figure it was fine.

Boy was I wrong! I just happen to cross a commercial's line (boat name Yes Dear) and he was pissed. I saw him coming around the corner with his auto dipper as I was about to begin running  my line. I saw me and I think he knew what happened cause he was beaming at me the whole time. He had his knife ready and the minute his boat pulled up my line he cut it right away.

Yes I was pretty upset but he was furious! I saw him make a call right away and I was sure he called DNR. Anyways....my bad. I knew I was wrong but it was not intentional I was just more upset because it has been 3 hours and I haven't really had a chance to crab yet. I wish I would have seen him crabbing, I did see him make one pass really fast but I did not see any gear in the water and thought he was a boat just passing by.

4. Retrieved line again and retied it. I drove further out and ran my line closer to the mouth at 5' of water. This time I made sure no one was in sight so that I would not cross anyone's line. The cove I was in was not big for a commercial's 5k line so I felt safe about crabbing there.  When I finally started crabbing I noticed my line kept going slack. The line would runs straight but sometimes seem like it just dropped straight to the bottom as soon as it passes over prop stick. Caught 2 crabs then gave up. Went fishing instead.

5. I have decided I will not fail next week! I just purchased 29 rigged foxy topless traps from Jerry in Bel Air, MD at http://www.crabbingear.com/

He gave them to me for cheap! Such a great deal....He sells rigged ones for 9.75 each or $225 for 2 dozens. You can also get unrigged ones for 7.50 each. I searched everywhere and online retailers sell these for at least 11.50 a pop. I am finally ready to hit the wye again next week. Good luck you guys.

FYI I have been reading your forums for the last 6 years from Texas and have crabbed at the Wye a few times before that. Met someone by the name of Henpot and he gave out really good tips when I first started. Is he still on this forum?

I got 99.9% of my crabbing gear from him. Great guy and helped me a lot(info on rookie crabbing). I know I may piss some people off but if that com. would have cut my line I would have have probably had to call my lawyer cause  I'm going after him. If I'm close enough to see whats going on and made a mistake I will fix it right away. I'm sorry I would have tied his trot line to the boat and went for a joy ride.

I got 99.9% of my money on that being one very expensive joy ride.  Great way to start (curd).

I was hoping he would stop and say "hey you are in the way" but I knew he was going to cut it at the speed he was going. Oh well....PPl on this river are generally nice. People always wave when you pass them. I did see the police drive their boat next to me and I waved to them but they did not bother to stop by. I guess it's cause I have all my stickers on the boat and we had a prop stick but were hand lining and fishing lol.

to the original poster's defense, I have seen alot of comm's using non matching, unmarked, trotline buoys and if the guy is only running it once an hour, you'll never know there is a trotline there.

I said I saw him drive by once but did not see him running his trotline. His dipper wasn't in the water at that time and he was coming by real fast. It wasn't a 1k line it was more like a 5k line to be honest I even looked for his buoys as I saw him coming by and didn't see it cause his line was so long. Maybe I am just a noob but I am not being a dick about the situation. Just want to have a good family day on the Wye that's all.

I agree ,it's hard to see that far,and I'm sure it's not the first time it's happened to him,1 mile is a long way to see esp on the water.

My very first lay of a line ended the same way - he was pissed - I do not know whom we was - but he was kind enuff to wait until I picked up my 300 ft line - on the Commercial Side - I have bumped into and dealt with far more considerate ones then not - should I ever lay across anyone ones line it will be an homest mistake - should you decide to cut my line - just to let ya know - ya did not get a Cherry - I has done it myself with the prop........ laugh laugh laugh

And what did I do - I called Jeff to help me figure out what to do next.
