Advice on installing and using a dipper
«

I broke down and spent the money on an aluminum dipper today. Never used one before.
Anyone have any tips on the installation? It all seems self explanatory and using it even seems more obvious. However, I'm not one to pass up learning from your experiences. My boat is a 1999 C-Hawk 25'. The deck is 1" thick wood covered with fiberglass. Would it be acceptable to use stainless steel lag screws covered in marine adhesive or should I install anchors? I was going to pre-drill pilot holes for the lag screws. I don't have access to the underside of the deck. As for the side mount I was going to use stainless through bolts with large diameter washers on each side, and lock washer, and nylon lock nuts. I was also going to seal these with marine adhesive as well to ensure I don't get moisture between the fiberglass and wood.
Anyone have any advice on using it? It seems too simple to operate. Am I missing anything? "Watch this!" seems to be the famous last words of an idiot. I know how it works, but knowing how I can get myself in a jam would be helpful.
Thank you for any help or suggestions.

Thats how I tell my customers to install their dippers.
Just curious, I'm assuming no, but did the fabricator supply mounting hardware?

Thank you guys for your replies. I got it installed yesterday. I tried it out today. I did well because the ones that I normally miss I didn't have to chase after. Only ran 1800' today. Found a sweet little place to trotline because of it too. I've learned not to divulge my spots thanks to several members here who were run-up on by some other boats. To protect the innocent I will say the dipper did extremely well in the spots that I was in. I picked up and moved twice. No dead loss at all! I ran at 2.5 to 2.9 kts without issue and it was really windy.

Not trying to stir the pot, but the dead loss everyone refers to normally isn't apparent while the crabs are on the boat. It shows up in the crabs that have been kept for a couple of days under refrigeration.
I'm sure there are other variables involved, such as; water temp, length of line, speed the line is run, how the crabs are stored on the boat, etc., etc..

No worries, I do understand. In fact, I see what you mean. We did have more than usual dead loss. Any recommendations to minimize this?

Slow the speed down. Don't run long lines. Throw the light crabs back.
