Summer Crabs, and some are not !

Hey Guys,
I rented out of Oceanic Marina with my Dad for our first trip of the 2012 season. We were the first boat out and quickly got set up on the north east side of the bridge at 7:20 with a slow ebb tide and a hard NW wind. After 40 minutes of whipping around on the anchors we had not one crab in the box, so we picked up and headed up river to Red Bank to escape the wind and try to catch the flood tide. We got there just before 9:00 and found the water to be very muddy from the run-off of the T-storms the night before. As the tide began to flood we caught just one jumbo male crab in a half hour time. with that, it was back to another boat ride, stopping in an area between the 20 and 22 bouys up against the shore line and BINGO, jumbo males jumped on our drop lines. Within a half hours time there 15 jumbo males in the box when it slowed, we picked up, moved about 50 yards up river and it was back in action. This was the norm for the remainder of the day. We were back at the dock at 1:30 with 43 nice male crabs to show for our efforts. Caught them on drop lines baited with bunker and/or chicken. Back at home we found these to be some of the best quality crabs we had in years, nice and full and very tasty !!

All the best....Low-Tide-Clyde

Nice, love that Sam adams summer Ale. The Brooklyn Summer ale is verry good also. Way to find the crabs i like those areas along the shore by bouy 20-22. Good fluke fishing near bouy 22 right off the channel.

My grandfather was an amazing crabber and passed it on to me. I wish he knew how good I would one day become.

I agree with everything, been out from red bank 4 times this year biggest crabs ever. You have to go find them and move when it slows incoming tide is helpfull.Yes the numbers are down for now but the size makes up for that .40 something almost filled the basket last week.I still will say that Irene changed the river at red bank anyway I hope it will come back.I was out there with you in october from oceanic
and we both did good,we will see.

Bouy 20 and 22 are located almost directly between the Oceanic Bridge and Red Bank on the river.  We did best in 6 feet of water between the channel (red side) and the North shore.

A few crabs were pretty white bellied, but all were full of meat, not just the "rusty bottoms"

Good luck and catch 'em up !!

WTG! Nice report and pics. Everything near the Oceanic Bridge is dead right now. The Rumson police also have put a halt on throwing traps from the bridge for now. Even though there are signs posted for no crabbing on bridge the local police have always given crabbers a pass as long as you didn't go too far up the bridge.

By land or by sea Red Bank is where all the action is for now. Or if you can trek over to the Shrews that seems to be doing well also. No marinas on the Shrews and crabs never have a lot of pressure there-which is always good.

Those crabs were well earned today. Nice job, enjoy!

Great report and great pix! The last one looks like the perfect advertisement, worthy of hanging in any above average man-cave.
