Has anyone been trying their luck on the Hudson?  According to the Corp of Engineers, the salt front is 67 miles north of the Battery.  I have seen action as far north as Newburgh.

I am curious if anyone has been out, and if so, how have you done?

I've wanted to try the Hudson, but everyone tells me I shouldn't be eating anything out of the hudson...so I never bothered.  I have tried the east river and got 3 good ones in about an hour.

Blue crabs can be eaten from the Hudson.  According to the most recent advisory from the NYS DOH, the recommendation is to eat no more than six blue crabs per week and don’t consume the hepatopancreas (mustard, tomalley, liver) or cooking liquid.

I read the advisory against the hepatopancreas, and it gets me worried.  I can't help but think that it would contaminate the flesh as well, so I try to crab in waters where there is no advisory at all, or at least one that has less of an advisory.  But just to stay on the safe side, I pretty much stay away from any of the green goo now.   Smiley

BTW where would you crab the Hudson from?  Downtown?  Midtown?  Uptown?  I would imagine you'd have a better chance downtown, but it would be dirtier there right?

Thanks for the info though!

man.. how can someone only consume 6 crabs a week.. my weekly average consumption since the season started is at least 2-3 dozen. anyway, the hudson is a stones throw away from where i live and i wouldn't touch anything that came out of there. jmho..

I've been crabbing the Hudson for the past few weeks.  I've gotten nine crabs in three outings.  A bit on the sparse side this year, apparently.

Crabs can be caught up to Poughkeepsie, sometimes further.

I also had slow action in Haverstraw, the crabs must be on the move.  The salt line is quite far north, according to Corp of Engineers, as of Friday the line is about 70 miles above the battery.

Over the last couple of days reports of action starting to pick up in the Marlboro area.

So far, I've been up around Croton Harmon, near the Metro North train station.  I'm going to try a bit further down the Hudson this week.

By the way, I saw a seven foot sturgeon two weeks ago!  It skimmed by on the surface right by my son and me.  It was a beautiful caramel brown color with white edging on its fins.  What a sight.

Watch out when eating them.  The health advisory says you should only eat crabs from Catskill south because of the PCB levels.  You're right on the lip of the danger zone up there.  I'd be extra-careful about the guidelines when eating those rascals.

Strong action off of Plum Point and Denning's Point in the Hudson, just south of Newburgh.  Consistent action, good size.  Hope it continues!!
