Ever capture a bird in a crab pot? Ever used intact bird for bait? I was assessing wind damage (6/29/12 storm) in my backyard this morning, and discovered what appeared to be a juvenile starling hung up inside one of my pots. Doors were closed, and this was the bottom pot of two stacked. My guess is that it either flew in looking for shelter, or got blown in somehow. Looked like it must have been battered around the pot pretty good once it got in - it was jammed head-first in the mesh - neck was clearly broken, and at least one wing. Sorry, no pic - I was in a hurry to dispose of it before the temp goes back up today (calling for 99F) Hopefully this doesn't result in a NJ requirement for bird exclusion devices in the future...

Do a little searching.  I've caught a opossum and squirrels before.  Birds all the time.  Don't talk about BYRDS around here.  You'll get shot!

I've caught just about everything in my pots (commercial type), opossum-rabbits-squirrels-quail-various birds. I started turning the bottom layer of pots upside down to get the funnels up off of the ground, that eliminated catching everything but the occasional bird.

I guess I had better get these bad boys in the water to at least reduce the variety of my by-catch ;-)

I have to ask...... why?
I think it stands for Bycatch Yield Excluder Device.  Just like the TEDS.  Turdle Excluder Device.  Shrimpers have to install these metal grates in their trawls to let the turtles excape from their nets so they don't drown.  Now the Feds want shrimpers to install funnels in their nets to let the bycatch (small fish) excape to reduce their mortality rate.  These devices not only let turtles and fish out but shrimp also.  They also slightly increase drag causing increase in fuel compumption and decrease in the spread of the net.  A total loose - loose for the shrimpers.  State of Louisiana refuses to enforce this law only feds. Coast Guard checks to make sure these devices are install.  We have been fighting this for 20+ yrs.
Google TEDS and Byrds to find out more.
