I have a question regarding handlining bait. Typically I use chicken legs and just tie mason line and throw it over and tie the end of it to the pier. I have done the thing with the hook and the weight, I prefer to not do it that way though. My question is this does not work well for bunker. The bunker eventually gets tore up really fast and falls off. Any ideas? I hear of these bait clips, not really sure where to get them though.

Yeah I agree. I only use it when I run out of chicken. It doesn't work as well and doesn't last long.

Salt it.  I halved and salted some bunker this spring and it did pretty well.  I pulled a couple traps baited with it this past April and had as many as five (5) keepers.  Some of which were females that went back in the drink.  Best trap of the season was four (4) male keepers in one foxy mate baited w/ salted bunker.

How do I go about doing that? I am aware people do salt bait, I just always used it fresh.

Chicken legs work good, but necks are very economical. I'm a little intrigued on how one uses them on a handline...a hook and sinker is needed I would imagine.

Just a neck and some weight - the weight should be secured so it can not swing into the crab - if it were to bump him he will be gone.

Chicken leg weighs a lot more than a chicken neck. I don't need any weights with a leg, I can easily see how you might with a small chicken neck.

I was just joking about being the best handliner. Im only the second best laugh. Just tie on the chicken neck and send it to the bottom. Where i crab now i need a little 1 once weight to hold them down because the current is swift. just tie the weight on about 6 inches above the neck and let them rock.

We used to use old spark plugs for weights.
