Travelled to OBX for the first time last week and spent a day on a commercial crab boat owned by the legendary  laugh Gene (Crabman) Ashton.  If anyone ever gets a chance to work on a commercial boat, go for it.  You will not regret it and will gain a better understanding of the industry and hopefully respect the comms and what they do for us crab lovers.
Left his dock around 6am and headed out to his pots.  We hit about 375 pots and were back at the dock with 23 bushels around noon.  I got a chance to work about the last 50-75 pots.  What an experience that was!  Work is non stop and you have to hustle to keep up.  His deckhand may be a small lady, but she would work circles around most of you.  We took one 10 minute break between strings.
Let me say that I enjoyed myself immensely.  Gene is a super person to spend a day with.  I learned alot about crabs and heard some unbelievable stories and laughed my [arse] off all day long.
If you are in OBX, give Gene a call.  His bushels are packed so full that a couple wires busted off closing them!  Just bring your own JO#2.  You wont find it there.
Thank you so much Gene for a great day!  I'll be back again next year and promise to visit again.  And thanks for the crabs.  They were packed full and awesome.

Trust me Ron, it was good to be back on the Chester in the jetboat yesterday!  I could work at my pace, which is a lot slower than Gene"s laugh

That's an understatement Ron. She also sorted everything in the time it took me to empty, rebait, and launch the pot.  She could do everything alot faster than me!

Gene is over 50...his capacity to take in NEW information is not what it used to be.....and seeing as though YOU could teach him a thing or two, I don't know how that would work out Huh Grin

I hope to, but I doubt it.  My daugher plays for one of the best high school volleyball programs in the N.E.  They have placed 3rd,1st, and 2nd in the state in the last 3 years.  The school has won about 10 state titles between the girls and boys in the last decade.  It's a volleyball factory, so I wont miss any games or tournaments for any reason.  Hopefully, I can crab and fish til I die, but she will only play for a few more years.  If the schedule works with the Wye date, I can be there.  Have to wait til the schedule comes out.

I have a Pale Ale and an Amber Ale on tap right now, with an Oktoberfest conditioning.  Making an IPA tomorrow and probably anothe IPA next weekend.  PM me and maybe we can go crabbing together and Ill bring you a couple samples.
