I know which ones you're talking about - the black mesh clam shell doohickeys. I like them because they have very little drag coming up and don't tire you out as much. Plus the crabs come up all folded up and slide right out "like buttah"!
They're made by Tackle Factory as I recall. Did a quick internet search, but didn't turn any up. Good luck in your search!

Why not buy them from some of the local guys ? Support your local tackle shop not wal mart ! You may also be surprised at what the local guys can tell you , how people are catching ,what bait ect . Try that at wallie world.

As shocking as it may be, the local guys might not have what he is looking for.

I'm looking at the image at:
http://www.midwesthuntersoutlet.com/item/113158_Tackle_Factory_Fishing_Tackle_Factory_CT12_Soft_Side_Crab_Trap.aspx
,
and I'm having difficulty visualizing how this trap closes before it rises.
The Tackle Factory web site seems to indicate that they manufacture Foxy-Mate traps and some other well-known fishing equipment:
http://www.tackle-factory.com/Home.html
FWIW, here are some other sources for the CT-12 soft trap:
https://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=Tackle+Factory+CT12&hl=en&client=seamonkey-a&gbv=1&cid=4323216359434010778&os=sellers

Look at the center of the picture - there's a ring on the top of the frame - the lines from each side cross through there and that's how it closes.
They may not be legal in MD - I contactedf DNR a few years back, and got an answer that basically boiled down to that they had no philosophical or structural problems with the traps, but they had no definition for them in the regs. I put mine away.

Thanks. That makes sense. It wasn't clear to me from the picture whether the "A" shaped item was a rigid frame or line, and the ring or eyelet wasn't clear, either. Re regulations - there is always the "permission or forgiveness" paradigm for the more adventurous among us, although that can get expensive...

Unless the dimensions are larger or it is viewed as not having at flat bottom - I think you could use it. Key Word - Think!
According to Maryland regulation, a collapsible crab trap is defined as a manually operated, portable device having a flat bottom not more than 20 inches by 15 inches, and not more than four articulated sides. The trap shall be designed so that failure to apply manually exerted tension on the closing mechanism allows the crabs to escape. In other words, a crab trap must allow crabs to enter and exit the trap until the user pulls the line up to retrieve the trap. This pulling of the line manually closes the sides on the trap.

There's no "flat bottom" on this critter - just a hinge and as I recall, each side is @ 10-12 by 10-12 inches. It meets all the other requirements.
With my luck, I'd get the officer who just had a run in with the crabber from [Sam Hill] and get the left over flack from that.

I have emailed the Maryland DNR requesting an answer as to if this device is legal as recreational crabbing equipment should it's dimensions meet the Maryland Requirements.

Let us know what you hear back - if anything. After my first go-round with them, I checked back several times, but got no answer back.

Have you tried online at walmart.com? You can pay for them and have them sent to whatever store you want.
Good luck in your search!
