we went out again today and crabbed the outgoing tide for about 3 hours.  we managed to net 22 keepers, mostly in the first two hours. just finished steaming the catch.  it is time to buy a new freezer, for sure.   we should be eating/bartering crab for many months to come.

i should be getting the boat on the water next week so i can start setting the traps that i havent even used yet.

my year-old lab managed to get in the photo, eyes glowing.  i cant help but think ahead a few months til when she will be fetching her first duck for me.

i am still trying to figure out the best way....tried all sorts of different ways.  i started off cleaning them and freezing them raw but i found that way they end up either mushy or sticking to the shell.  those crab are now designated for the soup pot.  i used the shells from the cleaned crab and made stock and froze that too.  ive also picked a whole bunch of meat and froze that to use for crab cakes later.

now i just steam them whole, eat my fill and freeze the rest.  some of them i clean first cause the gf doesnt like mustard.

i am pretty sure you must cook your crab before you freeze   em      my method   is    cookem  crack a double ipa an clean em eat as you go and freeze the rest with good quality food wrap    make sure you wrap em air tight  the meat will make it til next spring     but i can never ration it out that long.    crab on...

We either cook or clean live. If just a live clean, then it's immediately frozen. Haven't had any issues so far, but now we cook before freezing cause the meat has a better texture this way. I thought the one no no was not cook dead uncleaned crab.  Huh

We can put live crabs in freezer for a good 1/2 to an hour to make them sleep, then we can easily clean them. Plus, those legs and claws won't separate when steaming them.

i think maybe a light switch went off in my head the other day and now i am thinking ducks ducks ducks.  still 3 months to go; time to build some blinds.  i really hope my dog will be up for it but she is pretty bird-crazy so i think she will be ok.

i do the same thing with frogs before i clean them....into the freezer, nap time.  with crab i like to get them into the pot kicking so i know theyre not dead.

Nice catch professor.

For crabmeat used in making crabcakes, I use my crab boil and then shuck and pick them.

Nice to see Massachusetts is catching some good quality and quantity crabs.
