I wonder what affect Katrina will have on shipments of LA crabs.  I'm sure there was substantial loss of gear.  Also heard it could take two months to have all electric restored.

First off, I have several commercial friends in the area and their safety is at the foremost front of my mind.  Secondly, most of them, it is their only source of income.  When the Tsunami hit, most of the fisherman in India only wanted help from the AID agencies to help them get new boats and nets to get back to work to support their families.  When a catastrophic event happens most people want to return to a sense of normalcy.  I'm sure it is the same for them.

I hope they can all return to a somewhat normal life down there, but so many places have been destroyed and wiped out.  In a year we'll look back at these places, rebuilt and new, and the storm damage will be a faint blur.  Time heals all wounds.  Look at the World Trade center... some people said it would take forever to cleanup.  Only took less than a year.  The human spirit is pretty strong in times of trouble, and I know those people will band together. I'm sure that the effect will be a complete devastation of their shipments!
I would think that this should be a no brainer!

I think you should wait until the crisis is over before you wonder about how it might benefit you personally. Sad

If your friends safety is at the foremost front of your mind. Then let's worry about how many of them survived the storm.

If I lived down there, I would really think twice about rebuilding in a place below sea level. Which means the water around you is higher than you are and there is only dirt wall holding it back. And they have to mechanically pump it all out.

This time a storm broke the levy, next time it could be a terrorist or the next storm or something else.

I wonder how many people there have flood insurance and what insurance company would give them flood insurance.

At least Ocean city and the eastern shore is about one foot above sea level, so the water will eventually drain itself.

I feel sorry for them but I think I would move.

And where does this benefit me personally?  Wrapped a little tight there aren't you?  All I did was ask a question.  I can guarentee you that as soon as they open the roads.  What gear they have left will be in the water to be back at work.

I agree with the idea of building below sea level is a bit crazy, but they will re-build, and in another 100 years, they'll go through this same thing.  I heard the levy was breeched slightly, whatever that means.  A slight breech could be catastrophic in a hurry.

as I watched the news.

The flooding didn't come the rain but a two block section broke in a levy wall holding back a lake.

So the water is coming in today and it flooded the pumps that pump out the water ( max one inch per hour)

So, ten feet of water = 120 inches divided by one inch per hour when they are all working eguals  120 hours to pump out after it stops coming in. Man what a mess. They said once the pumps are working, it will take two weeks to pump the water out.

If they were above sea level, there only be isolated local, limited flooding from the rain.
This going to be in the news for a long time.

If the supply from there is cut off the price will go up for you right!!!

The timing of this post stinks!
They're still pulling people off roof tops and fighting the floods and fires as a result of this storm.

Incorrect, my price has been fixed all season and there is no correlation between my crabs nor LA crabs.  My price is predicated upon expenses incurred and effort expended.  Your doing an awful lot of judging for not even meeting me dude.

While you are judging me, I'd just like you to know that I worked 15 years for one of the worlds larget international aid agencies and currently work for an aid agency that is already receiving donations for Katrina's destruction.  I've seen first hand all around the world especially in developing countries what catastrophies can do.

Then what is your reasoning for this post at a time when people in that area are still fighting the effects of the storm?

I wonder what affect Katrina will have on shipments of LA crabs.

What do you think the effects will be? The question seems disingenuous to me.

Like I said your timing on this one sticks!

Sounds like everyone is a little touchy!  I don't know much about any of it, but I do know a few things.

Slayer is one of the better folks on here, and I in no way think he meant his question in a disturbing manner.  It is a fair question!

As far as bad timing?  Many of you jumping him are the same ones watching the news, listening to see how it will affect fuel prizes and insurance premiums!  Send your same responses to CNN, Fox and all the other news that have people holding meetings trying to determine the nickles and dimes of it all!

It is a sad deal down there!  If you feel so strongly about it, make sure your the first one getting a few bucks to the relief agencies, rather than starting a meaningless frazzle on here!

I am with Henpot...its sad but at least waste your energy on trying to help and unite for support. There are alot of folks who lost everything they had. There are more important things in life than having an argument about this.. Lips Sealed

SW remember that city is a couple of hundred years old, they may not have had the means then and just built around what was already in place. Still have yet to hear from the family, and it could be a couple days even if everything is alright. Angry I think we should be worrying about the lives before the livelihood, I think deaths are going to mount once they get in there. Sad

Joe, you and your family have my full support.  I hope for the best for all of you.  I agree with you... at this point we've got to deal with the life and death toll, and assess the situation.  I wouldn't even know where to begin.  Stay strong. Wink

Can't even get a phone call through. Sad Niece's resturaunt around Biloxi, she will have to start over., Biggest concern is my nephew and his kids, who were in the direct line of the eye inland. Then you have to worry about basic life essentials and disease breaking out. Firts things first, the rebuilding comes later. Sad
