I'm new to crabbing! My question is for you guys who throw traps from the bank. How do you assure that your trap sits the right way up once you have thrown it in from the bank? Add weights to the bottom?
Thanks for the advise.

I'm by no means and expert or anything, since the last time I crabbed was 30 years ago...but where my dad used to take us, we used traps off the shore............I'm pretty sure all he did was add weights to the bottom.....well that and a pretty good hunk of bunker to weigh it down.  Of course the tide comes into play too.

Yep, adding wt helps alot. Also, a well timed yank on the rope gets the trap to land right before it hits the water...I have yet to master it. Wink

Edit: Leakey just informed me that yanking the rope actually hinders it landing right! Guess that's why I can't master it.  jester I'll let you guys know if I do better without that "trick."  Roll Eyes

Some of the guys in this forum tout the crabhawk. I myself have never used, but based on the little I've been able to pick up on the contraption, if may suit your needs for this type of crabbing.
