Hello All,
First real post here, just registered today! Anyone have any new reports on south river crabbing in Edgewater, my buddy and I usually run our trot line near the RT 2 bridge. Unfortunately he has been out of town for the last month and it's his boat so I haven't been out in a while. Going through crabbing withdrawls!! Thankfully he is getting back in town next week so we are crabbing on Sunday the 29th. Anyone been catching crab around there? We went out about amonth ago and got 90 real nice keepers. Any info is much appreciated. Thanks

I went out last Saturday 7/14 and hit the incoming tide after the rain storm. laid 25 traps starting at about 9 am in 4-15 foot of water and got well over 100 crabs that were just undersized. kept moving traps into different depths trying to find the keepers and ended up with 11 to take home by 1 in the afternoon. another guy within site of me was there running 1200' with chkn nex and said he didn't get a single keeper and 3 or 4 that were just undersized.

Good Luck....seems like its been lots of smalll crabs, Females, with the occasional keeper mixed in. Thats pretty much everywhere right now. Be prepared to work for them, they'll taste that much better!

Thanks and Hail Skins!! I have no problem working all day for the delicious taste of blue crab. Just hoping that things pick up a little bit in the next week or so, we were catching huge crab 6" plus last month. So funny how things change so quickly when it comes to crabbing, maybe we will need to bring the extra 500' of trot line out to get more coverage. Thanks again

I just think most of the larger crabs were caught in the first half of the season, leaving the undersize crabs and females......there will be pockets where you'll come across some nice #1's....but you wont find anywhere where its all #1's...the lil guys are tearing bait up....we're all kinda looking forward to the next few months giving the undersized crabs a few chances to molt and become legal...then the crabbing should get good *Fingers Crossed*...let us know how you make out!

Yeah your probably right about the first half of the season. I guess we will just have to run the line 100x hoping to get at least one keeper a run!!

Haha yeah 100x would have me exhausted! A few a run wouldn't be awful just not the numbers we saw even this time last year, but things are always changing on the water. I just can't wait to get out there been almost a month and I live for this stuff, wish I could make a living doing it.

Thanks CrabbyLAD, I will work all day if i have to. We usually get out right as the sun is coming up and are usually able to head in around noon for a lunch time feast, maybe next weekend it will need to be a dinner time feast since it may take a little longer. But glad to hear you were able to get some yesterday.

I also went out 7/14 north of the bridge. 1000' of chicken necks from 6-8 am. Took home a dozen and caught plenty of undersized. The storm made me pack up early. I think this is my chance to try some spots that get less pressure.
On a side note, you know it's bad when the DNR culls your crabs and throws a 4.5" crab in the keeper basket. I waited until they left and tossed it back in the river.

Hey all,
This thread caught my eye. I crab the South River pretty awesome and lately its been sucking pretty bad. Sunday, August 5th (today) I went out from 5:30am until 1pm and caught a grand total of 15 keepers on a 1200 ft in-line trot line with chicken necks. Caught two jumbos (6.5'' plus) the rest were barely legal. Last week during the evening I had a similar experience, although I probably caught my largest crab of the season, a real monster that was nearly 8'' across!
Anyway, curious if anyone was out today or this past week around the Rt 2 bridge and how they did. Seems like its hardly worth the effort of setting a line if your only catching 2 crabs an hour. Any thoughts on other places to check? I was thinking about trying the mouth of the South River next time.....
