best way to catch soft shell crabs

Im trying to figure out how to catch soft shell crabs. right now i run a trot line 1000ft and rarely ever get soft shell unless its the occasional doubler here and there. any advice would be appreciated

Crabs that are ready to shed or have shed and are soft don't eat, so the only way you'll catch a softy on a trot line is if the jimmy that's holding her is hungry (doubler). The advice dreampixel gives is good, only thing I'd add is if wading, figure which way the current is running and move from up-current, or you'll quickly stir things up so bad you can't see anything, the water is usually dirty enough anyway, and I have better luck at low (or near) tide.

Does it matter what time of year? From reading it sounds like mid or late May is the best, but that soft crabs continue sporadically throughout the season in lesser numbers. Is this time of year too late?
