I Love Crabs!

Ignore
« on: July 20, 2012, 11:13:01 AM »

I went 7 miles from the ramp and laid out 1200 foot trot line with about 120 chicken necks at day break. By 9:00 am the bait was gone. Had a total of 26 crabs and they were 51/2 to 61/2 inches. In all the years crabbing the Wye I have never seen so many small crabs. That is great for the future, but not good for a while.  The weather was great and the sun rise was worth the trip.
After the trot line was in, I put out a few ring nets. Pulled one and had 7 small crabs in it. After that I picked up and headed in. I am glad I had a the opportunity to feed the small crabs and help them be fat and tasty when they mature. So my advise to all is, go crabbing and have a good time and feed the little crabs.

Makes you wonder how it went back when the Native Americans were in charge of feeding them.

Wow, more small crab reports out of the WYE.  Very surprising, glad you got some.   Grin

Was there also Thursday, motor was acting funny so I didn't go too far from dock.  Still managed to get 53 keepers. but it was strange seeing the baits chewed down to nothing in just an hour or two.  Pulled one trap and thought I had the mother load but turned out to be a snapping turtle looking for a meal.  Wound up catching him 4 times throughout the morning.  Very friendly dude.

I had a turtle keep popping his head about the same spot and i would have like six necks stripped in a row on my line...very rough day for bait....
