We hit the water at the crack of dawn! (9:30 AM) about 2 hours into the incoming tide.  We dropped 20 Capt Bruce traps baited up with one chicken neck in each trap.

The 1st two runs were fair with about 10 or 12 large keepers on each run.  Then we noticed we were pulling up a lot of traps witout bait in them.  It appeared the bait was being stolen from our traps before we could make a complete run and get back again.

We thought it was being taken by turtles so we rebaited using 2 to 3 necks in each trap, our 3rd run was gold!  1,2,or 3 Crabs on every pull.  It turns out the creek was loaded with so many crabs you had to put multiple baits in the trap or the trap would be cleaned out by the time you came back on the next run.

6 Runs 84 Crabs and we threw back all females and everything under 5 inches.  Water temp was 82 Degrees, Crabs were everywhere in 3 to 12 feet of water.  Green Heads were tolerable dispite almost no wind.  A great day in a little creek off of the Delware Bay.

Good Job Hook, Hey can that dog pull traps??

On a side note, I feed my lab the first leg joints off the body and she loves them.  Does anyone do this???

Nice catch. Good report. I learned my lesson to not put out more traps than you can tend before the bait is gone. When they are real hungry, I put the traps closer together as well to shorten the time between setting and hauling.

Great report and beautiful dog.

My dog likes to eat the bodies after we pick them.  Strange dog, but I figure she's getting her calcium!

I learned my lesson to not put out more traps than you can tend before the bait is gone. When they are real hungry,

There are times when I cut the necks and only use half, to give me more time, this works but as you say when they're hungry they can reek havoc.

This is why I don't understand guys who run 1200' line and 30 traps, you could never get away with that where I go, unless the trap bait was encased in a bag. They'd pick you like a Christmas turkey. laugh

I'm not talking about losing whole baits, I mean a 4" neck gets clipped left and right sides and you are left with an inch in the trap.

Wire ties normally require replacing each time - unless you have the reusable type - I think in order of keeping bait in the trap and having a reusable holder. It goes:

1 Bait Clip
2 Snoop - old name snood
3 Spring

Just MHO
