Anyone on the forum have a wooden workboat? I have a 40ft deltaville built boat and would like to repower it but don't want to rip the boat apart with to much power. Right now I have a 175 hp 3208, any ideas on max hp would be a big help.

I think you can bump the 175 to 210 by just turning around a part in the injector pump, no additional parts needed. Find someone who's familiar with the 3208. Remember, any increase in HP brings you an increase in fuel consumption. With the current economy and fuel costs, I'd keep it simple.

I work for Towboat Us and run a 37' Tangier style boat.  Glass over wood and the stringers are pretty soft.  Just rebedded the motor and its a 430 hp cummins w/ a 24'' wheel, I believe. I have to be very careful when running it and ease into the throttle at low rpms, or when towing.  

If your gonna spend 30k to repower I'd spend 40k on a big center console with an outboard.

Remember...Diesel equals torque as well as better fuel consumption.

So depending on what shape the bottom is in, you could go to a 300 hp 3208 cat with little changing to the setup and modest cost.
375 hp 3208 would cost a little more.

The small 3208 is a good trot lining motor. Any step up in diesel motor, would mean adding a way to slow the boat down for running a line. The larger diesels would need a trolling valve to slow it down.

I don't think he can do it with the 3208 natural. Some major differences with the block and heads.

If your satisfied with the speed your running now, go with something in the 200hp range, if you want to go 30kts you need to look for 450hp...Theres no substitute for HP if you want to go fast..

Thats a lot for a 40 foot boat, I'd think it would take 400 hp for that,then again it depends on how easy the boat pushes.

The towboat I run does around 18 with 430 HP, and its only 37 and glass over plywood. I think your aiming too high.  Your gonna be in the 450+ range, id say.

Very true, a lot of good talk about the 220 cummins and the 225 john deere. One day i may have it glassed and i would pick up some speed that way as well.

Unless there's something wrong with your motor, you should try bumping the HP to 210 like I said above - it's free, you don't need to buy anything. You're only talking about 10 - 15 hp difference from the motors you mentioned. One other thing, a lot of people have trouble with cooling the John Deeres. Don't know why, but it's a pretty common problem.

Stay away from the B series Cummins. Even their shop people call them a 4000 hr throwaway.
B series has no sleeves so rebuilding down the road is really not feasible.

I've seen firsthand a couple that were bored and sleeved but they didn't hold up to much use.

Most of the 40'+ crabboats here are running 600hp + to achieve 18-20kt cruise.
