I know what a doubler is and i know that i see a lot of people on here make a big deal about catching them, but i do not know why its a topic,  what do you do with them when you get them? I think i might be missing something.

Normally the Male of the 2 will be a big hard jimmy - it also means the females have arrived from their journey up the bay - in the case of those whom can keep the female they have a crab which will soon be a soft crab - sometimes she might be soft when caught or busting.

To me being a Rec - it is a sign of a good hard jimmy in most cases. Should she be soft when caught and meets the min then a Rec has a soft crab.

The female is always a peeler or a soft crab as DP just mentioned. What good that does a rec crabber, I have no idea since they can't possess a female peeler. Sometimes the male is pretty large, maybe that's it.

There are two things good about doulbers.  The male carrying the female is always a mature heavy crab (rusty) and is the best eating.  The female is either a pink or red line peeler.  This means she will shed into a soft crab within days. If you have a shedding tank to put them in, then you have a constant supply of soft crab.  Some states may restrict the taking of female peelers.

Check her - if over 3.5 inches and soft she makes a sammich.  I think 3.5 is correct

On a different topic:  When people are catching lots of doublers, it means that there is a run of female peelers about ready to shed.  This means that a large number of bigger males are doubled up looking to mate with the females once they shed.  Many males will not feed or at least not hold on to a trot line when doubled up, so crabbing tend to be slower during these times.     On the other hand, the male crabs that you do catch that are doubled up tend to be fat.

I don't make a big deal about it anymore.  The first time i caught them i just thought it was cool.  I had never seen them let alone caught them.

I love catching doublers because only the healthy larger males double. Its just nice because you know he's going to be fat and tasty. The female doesn't matter to me. She just gets tossed back.

It's a CHESAPEAKE BAY AND TRIBUTARY specific rule in Maryland. You can possess and keep peelers over 3 1/2" and mature females if you are crabbing the Coastal Bays and Ocean (Ocean City) part of Maryland.  Wherever you legally catch them, peelers make great fish bait, soft crabs make great sandwhiches and the jimmies are great steamed. A two for one bonus.

Since this was posted in General discussion and not Maryland section, I'm sure some replies about doublers and peelers will reflect laws in other areas.

I caught a pretty good number of doublers last weekend. the males were jumbos one was a true 8 incher some of the others were over 7in. all caught onn trotline.

I think the rule is she has to be 5 1/4"   only peelers, hard crabs not having shed, can be 3.5".  Once shed (Soft or hard) she has to be 5 1/4"

Right now peerlers and softcrabs have to be 3 1/2 in. I was surprized that the size for both was 3 1/2 but thats what NRP told me when i asked while being checked on the water last week.
