Crab handline & trap Questions - 2012 regulations for North Carolina resident & non-resident:

I know this subject has been beat to death, but I still have questions, and maybe this will help others as well.


The questions are reguarding the 4 traps that are pictured below...

1.)Which of these traps below can be used WITHOUT a license ?

2.)Can hand lining and any of these traps be used WITHOUT a license on a boat motorized or paddled ?

3.)Can you handline and use traps at a public boat ramp / dock ?

It's always best to ask the DNR but the way i understand it is all the traps you have shown can be used without a license.  You'd measure the largest opening diagonally on the topless traps so it's not larger than 18",  same thing with the ring trap,  The pyramid trap is a little trickier and since I don't care for them particularly, I haven't looked into it.  I crab from a boat and I know you can use as many as you want.  AS for public docks and piers, it would depend on if there were regulations governing the spot.  There's a detailed post pinned to the tiop of this section right from the DNR.

Thanks for the reply MagnumTRex,very appreciated. I read the threads on your trip, and you used 16 traps, did you use buoy's and drop them off one at a time in different spots ?

And I know what you mean about the pyramid trap (trap2) and the trap similar to yours but with a top (trap4) they don't have an opening when closed. I have more reasons for starting this thread, I have some idea's for building my own traps, but need to know what is legal and I guess I will have to call and ask. I just hope I don't get the run around, that’s why I asked here first.

I did use buoys and dropped them off in a line about 20 yards apart.  Sort of like the deadliest catch on a smaller scale and not quite so deadly.
