Is it possible to throw topless 4 door crab traps from shore, as in NOT from a pier, and catch crabs?  I'm talking about these: http://www.go2marine.com/product/80002F/star-crab-trap.html

Thanks for any help.

Anything is possible. But I don't throw traps, because 9 times out of 10 you get a tangled mess.

I call that a star trap and have crabbed them from shore with good success. I find that if you put some weight on the bottom and keep tension to keep the trap closed until it lands then release the line the tangling is minimal. I have better luck from shore with these than with box traps. Good luck

Tossing those may make a twisted mess when trying to retrieve. Let us know how you make out.

MHO retrieving them is the major problem as they will come in at an angle. At some point they will drag bottom and find every thing on it on the way in.

Can definitely be done but like these guys said sometimes it comes back tangled up. I used to do it all the time when I was younger without a boat. If you get the art of throwing it and getting it to land flat down it will work most of the time.

I wonder if throwing it with the doors open and a swivel on the main line, like a frisbee would work?

Idea - go out in your yard and try it - Wink That's how I learn to fly cast.

My guess is no - prove me wrong Grin

From past experience throwing a trap, I always tangle it up.  That's why I try to drop them straight down.
