Saturday went out to the Gunpowder at the mouth of the Dundee with my good friend and stated to run a 600 foot trot line. Had a hard time trying to keep it tight. Every time we had a bowl in it. Moved it several times and still the same problem. Had many little chicken sneakers taken all the bait. Never had so many little crabs in all my life. Please advise

What are you using for weights at each end?  How heavy are they?

Probably doesn't matter what he's using, unless he is crabbing in 20' of water with 21' of line.

Get heavier weight and put at least 30 feet of line from line to buoy and buoy to anchor.  Use brake rotors, or cinder blocks, or dumbells.  If its 600', I'd say at least 10 pounds on each side.

I weights are 10 Lbs mushroom at each end. With 25 foot from float to 2 foot of 1/4 inch chain to 600 foot trot line. The mud was heavy in that area. please advise. Got in my prop three times.

I've got 100' either side of the float.

Crabbed to 25', never have a problem.

10 LB mushrooms should be fine, especially in mud....that's what I use and I've never had a problem.
I honestly think your chains are too light and too short.  My chain is a lot thicker than quarter inch and each one is about 3 feet long.
Also, in the creek I always run the line parallel to shore, never from shore to shore.  I figure that the tide will really push that line if its running across.

It would seem obvious, but, the way you have it worded here makes me wonder if you are running a anchor line AND a control line to your trot line. Being new, you may not have everything the way it should be. Here's an illustration that you can compare to. Don't pay attention to the chain lengths.

I was thinking the same thing,I'm glad you said something,I had similar problems,I had too small floats and not heavy enough anchors, after those 2 adjustments,I was fine

Chains are plenty big enough. You need more weight. Pay attention to the people that have been crabbing for  a long time. Not the people that have been crabbing for the last few years and think they are experts.

I think everyone is just trying to help this guy.  I don't think anyone was claiming to be an expert.

IMHO

mushroom anchors are clean and pretty and don't get snagged but don't work

I agree, a trotline needs dead weight.  I used to use a 12" block for an anchor, it broke in half one day and i used it many times after that, its probably 15 pounds and its holding 2000'

Some areas where I trot line, I have a lot problems with turtles.

Two or three good size turtles, can put quite a bow in the trot line.

In those areas I use heavy weights and pull the line as tight as possible when putting it out.

It won't stop the turtles from feasting, but it will cut down on the bow in the  line from them pulling at the bait.

I called Jerry@ Crabbingear.com and was told to get my butt over to his house and seat down  and talk about the pros and cons to setting up a trot line. This man sold my wife everything  last Christmas and is a very wise man. Been in the business for many years and is a senior citizen like me. Also he has cold beer. Thank everyone for  you input Mrken

Jerry is pretty wise and is not stingy about passing on his knowledge and experience. A real down to earth helpful soul.

I went over to see Jerry and sat down with a cold beer. He said that I need more weight and that the 10 lb mushroom weight look good but don't work. He said go to work and find some rotors from a car. Need 15 - 20 lbs. and the cost is zero. Thank you Jerry

And why do YOU care. And if YOU do, maybe you had better meet him and make your own comment.

When we first started using clams on trot lines, he thought the idea was ridiculous. He and his buddies hadn't heard of it, therefore it couldn't be done.
