Thanksgiving Day report
«
on:
November 24, 2005, 05:35:29 PM »
HiYa Guys!
Caught a couple dozen jimmies in about 45 minutes today.
Was using fishing poles and chicken necks.
Had 2 that were over 6 inches across the rest in the 4 to 5 1/2 inch range.
Happy Thanksgiving!

What's the minimum size for blue crabs in Florida?

None that I'm aware of. I know I've seen people keeping them around 3 inches but I'd rather let em go. There's plenty here of decent size for the taking.
I believe the only restrictions are a limit of 5 traps, no females with eggs and a ten gallon limit per person per day.

I think that you will find that Florida has a 5 inch minimum; besides, who wants to eat those little spiders, if it's under 6 inches I'm not interested.

Just seems kinda small, I'm use to Maryland Regs, they have to be 5-51/4" depending on the time of year.
I don't usually keep anything under 51/2", but as long as you're not breaking the law down there I guess its OK.

Hi Roy can you point me n the right direction to find the size limit? I've searched and searched and found nothing. I'm not looking to argue with you, just want to see it.
I certainly want to abide by the laws.

Will,
This won't be popular with some members but you are correct. I searched the forum and found this link:

That link is the only one I've found with any mention of crab size limit (stone crab claws).
I have talked to a Game Warden here when he checked my license, I did ask him about the size limit, he quoted me the 10 gallon amount and said there was no size limit. I haven't found that in writing tho.

Zatarain's Gumbo mix with rice. I use 4 boxes and use the water for only 3. I add okra, corn and celery. 1 pound of chicken, 1 pound of kielbasa, 1 pound of shrimp and 1 pound of cleaned crab (legs and lower bodies still intact).

Thank you Islander!
I have that page in my favorites and either missed the "No size limit" or forgot about seeing it.

There is no size limit on FL crabs because they are also used as bait especially for Permit and other types of fish.

I'll stand corrected about the size limit, I recall checking several State's limits several years ago and found them all to be 5 inches, but apparently not now. I still have no desire to eat crabs smaller than 6 inches though.

Those small crabs don't do anything for me either, but to each their own.

I never heard of using fishing rods for crabbing, although, I've often caught crabs while FISHING with a rod. What is the advantage of chicken necking with a rod ?

Getting the bait further out. Works fine for positioning up close when you see em walkng by too.

No problem Roy, I was just looking for info. I usually don't keep em if they don't look 5 inches to me, never measured them though. When they are a little smaller, they go great in the gumbo, see above.
