I have been re-thinking my position regarding the advertising boards and my decision to ban non-supporting members from posting to them. After a lot of careful thought, I have reversed my decision. Let me explain.

This website was built upon the idea that there should be a free and open place to share information and ideas about crabbing. Everyone, and I do mean everyone, should be able to post here freely (freely meaning without restriction and without having to pay.) The advertising boards are no exception. There are lots of folks who have benefited from non-supporting members posting ads here. I've seen people snatch up LCC licenses posted by a wandering guest. Those ads would never have been posted if the current restrictions were in place at the time. Yes, some people take advantage of this place by taking and not giving back. But there should be no requirement to pay money to use this place... after all, that's why I call them donations and not subscriptions.

So, after careful consideration, I am lifting the restrictions on the advertising boards. If we need a carrot to entice members to become supporting members, it should be the Supporting Member boards and the fun that we have there.

Steve, if it is one thing that I have learned in my short time on this earth, is that the more you give the more you receive.  Wink

Well said, Brian.  Smiley

And, I offer a public apology to ChrisS for my actions.

This incident reminds me of a quote from the movie Christmas Vacation:

"Look, uh, sometimes things look good on paper, but lose their luster when you see how it affects real folks. I guess a healthy bottom line doesn't mean much, if to get it you have to hurt the ones you depend on."

Amen.

I should have heeded that advice from the very beginning. Live and learn, I always say.

Exactly, Tom. You hit the nail on the head.

There isn't a day that goes by that I don't learn something new from life. I am far from perfect but I am willing to admit to my mistakes and learn from them. I try to be fair and rational and use good judgement, but I still manage to screw things up!  Roll Eyes

So, again, I apologize for my mistake.

I am also relaxing the restrictions on member profiles. Another bad idea on my part. As of now, regular members can now access their advanced profile settings.

Everybodys pencils have erasers on them! Good call! That's what makes this site what it is...GREAT!
I just joined a group in Florida and their site is free unless you want to get to the members areas where the real info is! For that you must become a member! This is now like that! Known as incentive to join!
Steve started this site with the purist of intentions but there are costs along the way unfortunately. Steve should not have to bear the burden of these costs alone. Steve, at White Stone I will be upping my membership to Life. Great job and please keep it up!

Steve,

The apology is not necessary, but it is appreciated. It's my opinion that it is up to you to run your site any way you wish and I do understand that it costs money to keep it up and running. I most certainly will make a donation to keep the site up and running because I really like it and have learned alot from it, just the friends I have made is worth the price of admission. Just want to take the time to offer a big thanks for the board, the board administration and it's members.

Thanks again,

ChrisS
