Florida crab statement.

The following is a new statement listed on the Floida crabbing regulations. I've never seen it before!
Female blue crabs may be harvested lawfully if they are not bearing eggs. Although it is lawful to keep non-egg bearing female blue crabs, it is a conservation practice to release them unharmed. There has been evidence that the females support the population of the species. Male crabs are capable of mating several times, but females are only able to mate once, after they mature. If a juvenile female is harvested, there will be no chance that she will be able to reproduce. Additionally, mature females may store sperm in their bodies for several months after mating in order to spawn at a later date. If a mature female is harvested, though she may not exhibit eggs, there is no certainty that she has spawned. Releasing female blue crabs enhances reproductive capacity and population renewal.
Way to go Florida!
Now lets see how the public reacts!

But what do you do when there are to many females,They have been knee deep this winter and there is nothing for them to eat in N.FL.water temp got down to 49 for a while. The crabs were so weak from lack of food that they were dying in the pots...

Still need the Jimmies as well. How about we put a three year moratorium in place on all crab harvesting?

I just want my topless traps as legal gear in FL, that I bought from Kevin.....Does anyone use the topless traps here in FL...and if you do has the FWC officer told you that the gear is illegal.....that is what FWC officer told Crabcruncher and myself.....Can or will someone or everyone call your FWC office in your area and see how they treat the topless traps in your area....I got a letter from a LT.with FWC that states the topless are legal, however I can only fish 5, they regulation talking about you can only have 5 traps are talking about the pots NOT the topless and the 5 trap rule doesn't apply to the topless....The FWC officers are confused on this rule.....My neighbor took a topless trap to a MAJOR with the FWC and the Major states I can fish as my topless traps as I like....I'm waiting to get a letter from the Major stating this, until then I will fish my 5 topless and my 2000' trotline......

The following is a new statement listed on the Floida crabbing regulations. I've never seen it before!
Female blue crabs may be harvested lawfully if they are not bearing eggs............
Bogman, thanks for the post, wished I'd read it last week before my trip to Titusville. I've lived here all my life and we've always kept females. The State DNR and Fish/Game are not on top of conservation or regulations in regards to blue crabs as other states. Their focus seem to be on sport fishing. For as much water/blue crabs that Florida holds, crabbing has never been the focus of the State or the public for that matter. It's through sites like this and people like yourself, that others become enlightened. We took 84 crabs last week, 12 were "red claws". It still would have been a wonderfull day if there were only 72 in my wheelbarrow.
Thanks,
Al

summerow, I'm using 5 topless traps, crabbing from piers. I've was checked by the water cops three times last year and not only did they say the topless traps were legal they suggested that I should start selling them here in Florida because I was catching more crabs than anybody on the pier.

I think I am going to start selling traps in my area. Everytime I go out with them I always get approached by people wanting to buy them.
