I dont know about you but Honestly I dont want someone to come near my floats. I about had to have someone for breakfast  for checking to see which way my line ran well he obviously could not pilot a boat cause on my next run I pulled up to my bouy an nada. he wound it up cut it off and went on. 5000ft of line is tough to pull with a winder when the current pushes it under logs and rock around pilings ect. If you see my stainless cans with a 676 on them keep going dont stop to look please.

That's too bad Geckert.

I'm afraid one of these days, some idiot will pass too close to one of my buoys and pull my rope into his prop...I don't want to be in the way when that rope comes tight.

this is exactly why I always have a sharp knife nearby to make a quick escape.  I've had people cut behind me and my floats plenty of time.... I figure its only as matter of time before someone with a deep enough draft grabs the line.

And if they hit the cans and pendant lines, that Osprey #9 is gonna do a dandy on their prop and shaft.  A lesson will be learned! laugh

No I was saying that they ran to close to it and wound my leader up in the prop cut it off and said nothing to me sitting about 400 yards away culling in plain view. I love it when they throw traps on either side of your line also. I have a whole collection of these too. I have a tendency to take them as trophys so please if you are a rec crabber respect the 100-150 ft boundry then add another 100-200 ft to it most waterman are nearsighted.

I know even if I see a rec guy that gets there first I will give them well more than 100 ft I know I do not have to but that is just a matter of respect for someone whom can get up earlier than myself. I dont really care one way or another I have about 1200 baits in the water if there are another 30 at 100' but when I have to swerve around traps when I run my line they come home with me. Like i said waterman are nearsighted they only see its a rec guy and most rec crabbers only go a handful of times a year and dont know all the regs. I have seen countless guys out with traps on WED. and they tell me I set to close to them imagine that. Honestly I could care less if someone adds another 30 baits to the area I am in as long as they are not on my line. I do have some respect for any crabber be it comm or rec it takes alot to get out there at 400 am.

......if they're that close than they're within 100 ft and breaking the law, and I agree with you 100%. I'm not one to take traps, infact regardless, I make more friends than eneimies on the water and end up selling my crabs to the same people at the end of the day. What argivates me is having to get up an hour earlier to fight recreational crabbers out....and I will not put my line out early just to save the spot. If my bait is in the water and I can't fish it, it's getting eaten and I'm losing money! Angry  NRP is no where to be found during the summer at those hours. I get out where I need to be at the appropriate time for (1 hr before) and the place is loaded with rec crabbers running they're lines with no lights.

......you could also tie a secondary float to the anchor itself in addition to the main. Alot of people do that so they can grab the secondary float to drag the anchor and tighten the line.

ChrisS,

ever consider being an artist for a career.  Excellent use of the computer keys.
Probably took a lot of time.   Shocked Shocked laugh laugh laugh laugh

Actually I have seen several of the comm guys on the wye run the second float off of their anchors and it is really help ful to stay away.  I always leave a t least 150-200 feet off the end of their float so they can swing their boat into place.    I have ordered my " reflective Seaweed tape" for my floats.  I usually go up and watch when the comm guys hook up their line and watch where they run so I don't get in their way.  tonage will beat a 16 duck boat anyday of the week.  A lot of them know me and my brother and we always ask them where they are running and they gladly tell you so that you aren't in their way and I then am able to lay my traps and everyone is happy.  A couple of times a few of my traps floated off on a rising tide and these same com guys waved me over to get it from them or they actually brought them to me.  I always say good morning to them and we all have room to crab.  I have heard of other comm guys cutting traps etc.  These guys have always respected my spread as I always respect them first and ask.  One time I did lay 2 traps in the wrong place on a line and I raced over to picked them up and I apologized and the Comm was fine and thanked me for it.  Always good to get along on the water as you never know if you may need someone's help out there one day.

I have had many people ask if they mind if they set their traps near me and for that I will gladly say yes. I have had many ask me where a good spot is and I will gladly tell them. They need bait and I have some out no problem. Need a tow? Hook er up. I am more than willing to help anyone at any time I have many friends and no enemies.(as far as I know)Basically all I am saying is courtesy is key. as for the traps I take these are the people that just dissapear cant see them anywhere gone vanished.

Gechert,
....I just wanted to appologize, by my post above. I didn't mean to make you sound like a selfish crabber for cutting some lines. I know that there a ton of people that deserve to have they're lines cut and they're boats burned.........so I'm in agreement with you as far as courtesy goes. I just don't want to insult the many on here that are commercial nor the many that are not...so we all can get along. This board is unike any I've seen, where commercial and recreational crabbers talk and get along like the best of friends. I've learned much that I never knew before from rec. crabbers here and when I feel, when I learn no more, I'll still keep coming back just for the friendships. We all know that there are slobs on bothsides.....and that was probaly the ones that got they're lines cut and deserve it!!! Smiley

Works for me. There really is no need to appologize. The one bad thing about forums (IMO) is the fact that you cant tell someones tone wheather is be sarchastic or humor ect. Text is cold but it serves the purpose. Oh well its all good.

G,

I agree, you catch more flies with honey than vinegar.  I always try to be friendly and ask  where comm folks are laying their lines and work around them, they are making a living I just need to a make a memory and hopeful a nice dinner..   Wink
All the comm guys I have meet in the past years I have respected them and kept my distance and always asked where they run and where I can lay if there are folks in the area.  They have all, but one responded equally friendly and hospitably.
I also agree sometimes it is hard to tell tone on websites as you don't know it is
joking around or digs.  Most on here give each other a really hard time so consider it being liked and fitting in.  God Knows I have taken my lumps form some of the guys I know the best.  Besides we are all getting antsy for spring to come and the crabs to appear.  So we are beating on each other in anticipation...   Grin

When it's crowded and the trappers and liners are everywhere, I just go somewhere else.  There are crabs all over the place!  That's how I find new spots that produce better quality crabs.  I was in the Narrows last year and there was no place to run my traps, no problem, I went back under the bridge into the Chester and caught a bushel of the biggest crabs of the year.  Oh yeah, there was no one around to see it so that became my spot.  Crabs are all over that place.
