Hi all! Live in Delaware and looking at getting a bushel for this weekend. I found a local guy that crabs. (I don't have the time) and is willing to sell me a bushel of mixed 1 and jumbos (he stated he pulls a couple bushels and will make me a nice one out of the two). What I need to know is if the price is fair. He stated 150.00. I have no IDEA what prices direct from the crabber are. Any ideas?

Also taking them to up north camping. I would get them around 2 on Friday pack them on ice and newspaper in a big cooler and not cook until sat evening. They should be OK this way? I know not to let them get into the water from the ice.

Thanks for any and all input!

Call Wiso's in Delaware city.  It's not all that far from you-and if you are heading North it's on the way. Ask them what a bushel of #1's are cooked and order them and pick them up. That's what I would do.
I think this local crabber is charging a whole lot-and you will probably end up with 5 in crabs and maybe a few #1's-but very few true jumbos.  There are not many true jumbos in Delaware.

Before I got my boat I always stopped by wiso's for crabs on the way home. No need anymore Smiley

Wiso's Crab House. (302) 834-2279

They have always been very fair. If they crabs are running small they will tell you.

Good luck~!

Oh..I just read the rest of your post

I don't like keeping them alive in a cooler that long-I lose too many, but  a lot of guys say they stay just fine.  I always cook mine right away and then re-steam them for a few mins and they are good.

Don't put them in a cooler, they'll suffocate.

Just keep them in the bushel basket with wet newspapers covering and a sack of ice on top.  The cold moist air will flow downwards and that should be sufficient till nightfall.

Dont forget it was a dozen crabs for $35 of #1's. The guy went to the backroom for a few minutes and came out with two 6 1/2" crabs. He was probably sorting through the crabs picking out the 2 biggest.
I smell a rip off. Atleast the spice was reasonable.

Thanks for the great feedback. The crabs will be traveling in the back of my truck. They will be under shade by the 5th wheel camper. I will prop the lid open a little to keep some air going through. Kepping them in the bushel worries me even with Ice and burlap on top the wind would dry them out.

For comparison purposes, there is a guy here in Southern Maryland that sells a bushel of #1's for $198.00.

At the website www.ordercrabs.com they are selling a bushel of #1 for around $160 and a bushel of Mumbos 7+ for $210. Considering you can get it shipped to your house and the price is cheaper than many stores.

On Friday I bought a 1/2 bushel really nice size #1 from a local source near Boyertown, PA steamed for $65.00. 40-50 crabs maybe 7 mush the rest were fat and tasty. Probably would have paid $120.00 for the bushel.

Yeah I do get a good deal, family's been doing business with the guy for 20+ years.  He usually brings us what he doesn't sell already cooked on Sat nites.  I bought 1/2 bushel and too bad he sold the rest.

Our local grocery store is selling them for $1.50 each.  When I saw that, I thought it was a lot, but it breaks down to $108 for 6 dozen.

Heck, I was going to drive to Maryland to get some, but I think we'll just buy them at the store now.  Especially with gas prices.

While I'm sure they're not as good or as fresh as heading to Maryland and catching them yourself, or buying them there, the Giant grocery store in Pottstown has them on sale for $1.50 each in your area this week.  That breaks down to $108 for 6 dozen.  There is no mention of the size either, which could be a bad thing.  IMO though, it's not a bad price when taking the price of gas into effect.  Like you, it's also a several hour trip to Maryland for me as well.

At the top of the page, go into savings, then click the tab for weekly circular.  When the next page loads, choose PA from the pull down menu under state, then look at a list of stores in the state.  You might find one closer to you than Pottstown.  I'm not real familiar with that area.

100% chance that the price will go up after all of this rain puts a damper on crabbing.
