Im Feelin Crabby!
Wye 7/9

Hi all, made the 100 mile trip to the wye today. dumped boat in (11' jon w/ electric motor), about 6am. laid 16 traps in 10-12 feet. caught 4 heavys in about 3 runs.also caught several horseshoes. moved traps about 1/4 mile in 8-12 ft. made about 5 runs got about 10 7"+ heavys, about 3 whiteys, 1 female and about 10 small 4" throw backs.
Water started to chop bad about 11:00, so I found a small cove and handlined awhile (just because it brings back childhood memories!) got several more heavys and missed about 4 that droped off to soon.
Rays were everywhere! saw about 20 one about the size of a car hood!
So, need advise: if Im catching tons of 3-4 inchers, what does this tell me? do I need to set traps deeper or what? Or is this just part of the natural cycle about this time of year?
anyway finished up about 12:30 with about 16 big dark heavy meaty sweet tasting crabs.
Its hard to run traps with electric power. Going to build a bigger boat this fall, and break down and buy a small outboard.
Hopefully with everyones help I'll learn the patters on this river, and make the 200 mile round trip more productive.

Until August, the steadier catches of crabs come from further down river toward the mouth (I'm assuming you didn't go very far with the electric motor). After that, anywhere on the river usually produces pretty good. As for small ones...mumbos have to start somewhere. Good luck on next trip.
