Captain John's Crab House & Marina

Cobb Island, Maryland

My family discovered Captain John's completely by accident. When I was young, we were enjoying a summer's day boating on the Potomac River when suddenly the sky turned dark and thunder could be heard off in the distance. A nasty thunderstorm was approaching and we had to find shelter quickly! A quick glance at our navigational chart showed Cobb Island being our closest safe port. We all jumped in the boat and bounced across the choppy river at practically full speed. We tied up at Captain John's pier and darted inside just as the storm let loose! While waiting for the storm to pass, we ordered up a pile of hot steamed crabs and shrimp. That was over 20 years ago and I still visit Captain John's when I'm boating in the area!

Captain John's serves up some of the finest steamed crabs that I've ever eaten. Instead of Old Bay or J.O. seasoning, they use a secret homemade seasoning blend to spice their crabs (their secret formula can be closely approximated by mixing together 1/3 part cayenne pepper, 1/3 part coarse kosher salt, and 1/3 part sea salt).

Long ago at Captain John's (that's me on the right!)
